Cougars Fall to Unbeaten Barry

Azusa Pacific makes their final NCAA Division II men's tennis appearance with a loss to the perennial power Bucs, 4--0.

SURPRISE, Ariz.—Azusa Pacific wrapped another successful men’s tennis season and a dominant career in the Pacific West Conference with a 4-0 loss to No. 2 nationally ranked and unbeaten Barry University (Fla.).

The Cougars finish 2026 with a 23-6 record and a PacWest title. This is the final year at Division II for APU, who will be moving to Division III and the SCIAC in 2026-27.

Today, they gave Barry plenty to battle with on Thursday morning at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.

The doubles point went to the Bucs, but only by the slimmest of margins. Barry won on courts one and three by 7-5 scores, and the unfinished match on court two was heading to a tiebreaker at 6-6.

In singles play, Barry won quickly at No. 4, but the rest of the matches were a battle. Mathys Pinoit eventually fell at No. 2, 7-6 (9-7), 6-0 and David James Brownlee lost in what was the clinching match on court three, 6-4, 7-5.

Meanwhile the other three matches could have gone either way. Soeren Grandke won the first set on court one for APU, as did Joan Crespo on court five. Jacob Rudd was leading in the third set on court six for the Cougars when the match was clinched.

The Cougars season ends in the NCAA Quarterfinals, while Barry will advance still unbeaten at 24-0.
