Sea Lions Fall To Top-Seeded UC San Diego In Regional Semifinals

LA JOLLA, Calif. -- An incredible 2018 season for Point Loma women's soccer came to a conclusion on Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 loss to UC San Diego in front of a capacity crowd at Triton Soccer Stadium.

Point Loma scored twice in two minutes in the first half, but the No. 1-seeded Tritons overcame the 2-0 deficit with three unanswered goals to pull of the comeback. The Sea Lions finished the season with a 16-2-1 record after reaching the NCAA West Regional semifinals for the first time in program history.

Abbey Teagle put the Sea Lions on the board in what started as a defensive battle. Bella Diaz found Teagle running down the right side of the field. Teagle didn't have much of an angle to work with, but managed to place the ball perfectly over the goalkeepers hands inside the far post for a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute.

Less than two minutes later, Diaz assisted another goal. Ashlee Smith scored this time amid a lot of traffic inside the box bumping the ball into the net for the second goal. Abbi Swanson also assisted on the second goal for an early 2-0 lead.

UC San Diego slowly chipped away at the Sea Lions lead and eventually took the lead in the 79th minute. Point Loma had several scoring opportunities in the second half, putting six shots on goal, but the Triton defense didn't allow a goal for the rest of the game.

Point Loma's 17-match unbeaten streak was ended by UC San Diego's come-from-behind victory. The Sea Lions finished the year with 16 wins, which is the most since they joined the PacWest in 2012.
