MONMOUTH, Ore. -- For the fourth time this year, No. 3 California Baptist defeated No. 7 Azusa Pacific winning the NCAA Men's Basketball West Regional semifinal 72-68 on Saturday at Western Oregon University.
Kalidou Diouf scored 12 points in the final nine minutes of the game, including two jumpers during a 6-0 run late in the game that gave the Lancers the lead for good. California Baptist will go on to play against the winner of No. 5 Saint Martin's and No. 1 Western Oregon on Monday in the West Regional Championship Game. Azusa Pacific finished the year with a 21-11 record after making its third trip to the NCAA West Regional semifinals in the last four years.
California Baptist led by as much as 14 points early in the second half after going on a 13-0 run over a 4-minute period late in the first half. However, Azusa Pacific came all the way back and took the lead on a pair of free throws by
Petar Kutlesic to go ahead 57-56 with five and a half minutes left to play.
The Lancers only let the Cougars lead for 13 seconds before answering with a 6-0 run that began and ended on jumpers by Diouf. With 12 seconds left in the game,
Will Ferris cut the California Baptist lead back down to a single point. Freshman
Ty Rowell made two clutch free throws on the other end to earn a 3-point lead. That allowed California Baptist to make a foul on the ground with three seconds left in the game so that Azusa Pacific couldn't attempt a 3-pointer.
The best free-throw shooting team in the PacWest, California Baptist made 17 of 18 attempts from the charity stripe in the semifinal. Diouf led that effort making all six of his attempts as he scored a team-high 20 points with seven rebounds.

Mandrell Worthy, who scored a team-high 24 points off the bench, making 8 of 13 field-goal attempts.
Selom Mawugbe had two blocks in the game to break the Azusa Pacific single-season blocks record with 89, which is also the new PacWest single-season blocks record.
California Baptist will find out later tonight if the next opponent will be Saint Martin's or Western Oregon. The only previous meeting with either team was a loss at home against Saint Martin's during non-conference play. The game will be played at 7 p.m. on Monday at Western Oregon University. This will be the Lancers' second trip to the West Regional final where they will be looking to advance to the Elite Eight for the first time in program history.
