Elite Eight Bound: California Baptist Wins NCAA West Regional

MONMOUTH, Ore. -- In its fifth attempt, California Baptist has won the NCAA Men's Basketball West Regional advancing to the Elite Eight with a win over No. 1 seed and host Western Oregon, 80-76, on Monday as the Lancers' snapped a 24-game winning streak for Western Oregon.

The No. 3-seeded Lancers led the regional final by seven points with less than a minute to go, but Western Oregon cut the lead all the way down to two and had the ball out of a timeout with 12 seconds left in the game. The West Region Player of the Year Tanner Omlid drove down the right side of the lane and spun into the key for a left-handed lay-up that bounced off the back of the rim. Ty Rowell won the ensuing scramble for the rebound and was immediately fouled. The freshman made both of his free throws to secure the Lancers' berth into the Elite Eight for the first time in program history.

This was the Lancers' second trip to the regional final after coming up short in 2015 to Azusa Pacific, which was the last time a PacWest team had won the region. Western Oregon finishes the season with a 31-2 record, while California Baptist improved to 28-5 this year. California Baptist is the first team to advance to the Elite Eigth and will find out who it plays next later in the week.

With 3:36 left in the game, Jordan Heading knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Lancers their largest lead of the game at 72-62. That's when Western Oregon began to heat up from beyond the arc with Ali Faruq-Bey and Demetrius Trammell both hitting threes to make the score 73-68 for the Lancers.

The next possession proved to be key for the Lancers, who waiting until late in the shot clock to take a 3-pointer. Rowell got the offensive rebound and reset the offense to run the shot clock down a second time before Cory Lange connected from beyond the arc with 1:19 left in the game. After a steal and a lay-up by Omlid, Kalidou Diouf made one of two free throws for a seven-point lead with 42 seconds left ot play.

Trammell made two 3-pointers for the Wolves, sandwiched around a made free throw by Heading to make the score 78-76 with the shot clock turned off. After a foul, California Baptist missed both free throws to give WOU the ball back with a chance to tie the game. However, the Lancers got the stop they needed to secure the victory.

Diouf, who was named the tournament MVP, finished with 23 points and seven rebounds. Heading was also named to the all-tournament team after he scored 15 points in the regional final along with a team-high six assists. Faruq-Bey finished with a game-high 26 points to lead the Wolves, while Omlid had 11 points, 11 rebounds and five assists to earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Azusa Pacific's Petar Kutlesic was also named to the all-tournament team after helping the Cougars reach the semifinals.

En route to the regional title, California Baptist defeated two-time defending runner-up UC San Diego in the quarterfinals, 2015 West Regional champion Azusa Pacific in the semifinals and 2016 West Regional champion Western Oregon in the final.
