California Baptist Gets Past UC San Diego In Quarterfinals

MONMOUTH, Ore. -- After falling to UC San Diego in the NCAA Men's Basketball West Regional semifinals in each of the last two years, California Baptist got the Tritons back with an 81-67 win on Friday to get back to the semifinals for the fourth year in a row at Western Oregon University.

Jordan Heading scored a team-high 26 points, which is his second-most he scored in a single game this year. Heading made 6 of 10 shots from the beyond the arc, leading the Lancers' 14-for-24 effort from beyond the arc in the win. Cory Lange scored 14 points, making 4 of 6 from 3-point territory.

With the win, the Lancers will go on to play the winner of No. 7 Azusa Pacific and No. 2 Dixie State on Saturday afternoon. The No. 3 Lancers led the CCAA champions for the entire second half after Jason Todd made a 3-pointer at the end of the first half. That lead grew to six when Lange hit one of his four treys early in the second half.

UC San Diego pulled to within three points with seven minutes to go, but Heading knocked down triples on consecutive possessions a couple minutes later to put the game out of reach. California Baptist made its free throws down the stretch to push the lead to as much as 14 points. PacWest all-conference selection Kalidou Diouf finished the game with 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Christian Oshita scored a team-high 23 points for UC San Diego.
