MONMOUTH, Ore. -- Host and No. 1 seed Western Oregon rushed out to a 31-9 lead against No. 8 Point Loma, and though the Sea Lions cut the lead down to as little as six, the Wolves held on for a 73-66 win to advance to the NCAA Men's Basketball West Regional semifinals on Friday.
It was the second meeting of the two teams after the Wolves won by a single point in the last meeting during non-conference play. Western Oregon will go on to play Saint Martin's on Saturday in the semifinals in an all-GNAC meeting. The other semifinal will be between two PacWest teams in Azusa Pacific and California Baptist. Point Loma finished the season with a 21-10 record, reaching the NCAA West Regional for the first time in program history.
Ziggy Satterthwaite led Point Loma with 18 points and nine rebounds, while
Sterling Somers added 17 points in the quarterfinal. Point Loma outscored the No. 1 team in the region 35-28. Now on a 23-game winning streak, Western Oregon was led by Tanner Omlid with 20 points.
The Sea Lions finished with their third 20-win season since joining the PacWest, including a seven-game winning streak during conference play. Point Loma claimed wins during the season over Chaminade, Concordia, Hawai`i Pacific and Saint Martin's.
