Miller Earns PacWest Player Of The Year Honor

IRVINE, Calif. – After defending the PacWest title, Azusa Pacific earned four awards as voted on by the PacWest coaches, including Julianne Miller being the PacWest Player of the Year, leading the all-conference team.

Along with Miller being the Player of the Year, her teammate Bailey Henington is the PacWest Libero of the Year and Annaka Jorgenson is the PacWest Freshman of the Year. Chris Keife repeated as the PacWest Coach of the Year after leading Azusa Pacific to its second-consecutive title. Point Loma’s Cara Keturakis is the PacWest Setter of the Year, and Leka Kiner-Falefa from Chaminade is the PacWest Newcomer of the Year.

Miller is a four-time All-PacWest honoree, who will finish her collegiate career as the PacWest’s all-time leader in both attack percentage and blocks. She also ranks in the top-10 in PacWest history for career kills and points. In her senior season, Miller was twice named the PacWest Player of the Week, and she had a .373 hitting percentage, which led the conference. Miller had 287 kills and 95 blocks in the regular season to help Azusa Pacific win the conference title and reach the NCAA West Regional for the third year in a row.

Keturakis became the third player in PacWest history to record 4,000 career assists this season, recording 930 assists for an average of 9.79 per set. The two-time Setter of the Year also earned her fourth All-PacWest recognition. She also had 237 digs and 103 kills this season. In her senior season, she helped Point Loma tie for fourth place in the PacWest standings with a 19-11 overall record, which is the program’s best finish in Keturakis’ four years in a Sea Lion uniform.

Henington is 42 digs away from breaking the PacWest’s single-season digs record with 632 this season, which currently ranks fifth. Henington’s average of 6.02 digs per set ranks eighth in the nation. She had a season-high of 41 digs in the Cougars’ four-set win over Cal State East Bay and had at least 20 digs in each of the Cougars’ last six wins.

Kiner-Falefa helped Chaminade take third place in the PacWest standings in her first year competing for the Silverswords after transferring from UNLV. She totaled 489 digs on the season, including a season-high of 31 digs against Fresno Pacific. In 107 sets, Kiner-Falefa only had 23 receiving errors, and she also had 32 aces for Chaminade.

Jorgenson led Azusa Pacific in kills as a freshman with 311 in the regular season. She joined an Azusa Pacific squad that brought back five starters after winning the PacWest last season, yet Jorgenson was the one who made the most attacks for the Cougars on the season. She had a .223 hitting percentage and recorded seven double-doubles, including a streak of three in a row. At Hawai`i Hilo, the freshman had a season-high 21 kills over five sets. She is the second PacWest Volleyball Freshman of the Year from Azusa Pacific, joining Miller.

Keife is the second coach in conference history to be named PacWest Coach of the Year two seasons in a row. After leading Azusa Pacific to its first conference title last season, Keife’s team defended its title with the 12th-best winning percentage in the nation. The Cougars won all of their first seven PacWest matches as part of a nine-match winning streak, which included wins over Point Loma, Biola and Concordia. They finished the regular season, winning 13 of 14 matches, including season sweeps of both Chaminade and Hawai`i Pacific along with a split against Hawai`i Hilo.

Azusa Pacific had four players on the first team All-PacWest, including two-time honoree Sara Wagenveld. Hawai`i Hilo had two first-team honorees in Bria Beale, who led the league in kills and Emily Wade, who led the league in blocks per set. Chaminade’s Emma Tecklenburg is a three-time All-PacWest honoree, and she is joined on the first team by her teammate Rachel Reedy, who earned her second all-conference recognition. Hawai`i Pacific’s Perla Escobar and Cameryn Collie were both named to the first team for their second honors each.
