Azusa Pacific’s Mawugbe Receives Top Honor

IRVINE, Calif. – The PacWest Player of the Year is Selom Mawugbe after he helped Azusa Pacific win the PacWest title for the third time by winning 20 games in a row to conclude the regular season, leading the 2019-20 All-PacWest team.

First-year head coach Peter Bond was picked by his peers as the PacWest Coach of the Year as Azusa Pacific won the PacWest regular season title. Chaminade’s Kendall Small is the PacWest Defender of the Year, Darnell Robateau from Point Loma is the Newcomer of the Year and Isaac Amaral-Artharee from Chaminade is the PacWest Freshman of the Year.

Mawugbe has been one of the best post players in the nation this year, leading NCAA Division II in field-goal percentage at 71.7 and he ranks second in blocks per game with 3.14. The senior averaged a double-double with 16.8 points and 10.1 rebounds per game. He is the PacWest’s all-time leader in blocks, and he holds each of the top-3 spots on the single-season blocks list.

He has recorded 16 double-doubles, which is the fifth most in NCAA Division II this year. Against Cal State LA, he had 19 points, 19 rebounds and eight blocks. During a 15-game stretch in December and January, he made 82.4 percent of his field goals, including three-consecutive games without a miss. Over the last seven games, Mawugbe has been shooting 80 percent from the free throw line too.

Small is the Defender of the Year for the PacWest after he led the conference in steals on the season. He helped Chaminade finish in third place in the conference, and the Silverswords are one of just two teams to have beaten Azusa Pacific. Small has recorded a steal in 21-consecutive games and recorded a season-high five steals as he got a triple-double at Notre Dame de Namur with 12 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds.

Robateau earned recognition as the Newcomer of the Year as he helped a new-look Point Loma team finish in second place in the conference, earning a first-round bye at the conference tournament. The second-team All-PacWest selection averaged 11.5 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. In his first game in a Point Loma uniform he made a strong first impression. Robateau made all three of his 3-point attempts and finished with 23 points and nine rebounds.

Amaral-Artharee improved throughout the season to earn recognition as the PacWest Freshman of the Year. He averaged 9.3 points with a 37.6 three-point percentage. He scored 18 points against both Hawai`i Pacific and Hawai`i Hilo to earn a spot in the starting lineup for the final three games of the regular season. During that span, he made 47 points with nine rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Bond took over the helm at Azusa Pacific and in his first year, he led Azusa Pacific to its third PacWest title and its best conference record at 20-2. During the non-conference season, the Cougars took out some of the top teams in the West Region, beating Cal Poly Pomona, Chico State, Seattle Pacific and Western Washington. Then the Cougars won 20 games in a row to conclude the regular season to be ranked No. 2 in the West Region.

Along with Mawugbe, Tyler Cartaino from Chaminade and Sterling Somers from Point Loma are the only repeat selections on the All-PacWest team. Cartaino leads the conference this year in points per game with 20.8. The other players on the first team are Kaden Anderson from Point Loma, Aamondae Coleman from Fresno Pacific, Stefan Milovojevic from Academy of Art and Jake Spurgeon from Azusa Pacific.
