AZUSA, Calif. -- Point Loma overcame a 10-point deficit in the final three minutes of regular to force overtime and then
Brock Mackenzie scored 11 points in the overtime period, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer for a 98-95 win over Biola in the final of the PacWest Championships to make the Sea Lions back-to-back tournament champions on Saturday at the Felix Event Center.
With the win, Point Loma gets an automatic bid into the NCAA West Regional and will find out on Sunday where the Sea Lions land in the bracket. The tournament is expected to be held in La Jolla, California, on the campus of UC San Diego. Biola's season ends with a 19-12 record after the Eagles reached the final of the PacWest Championships in their first year of eligibility by knocking out the No. 1 seed Azusa Pacific, which had been on a 20-game winning streak.
Both teams shot well in the overtime period with Biola matching every basket that Point Loma made. Both teams scored eight points in the first four minutes of overtime to make the score 89-89. After the Sea Lions split a pair of free throws, the Eagles made both of their free throws to take their first lead of the overtime period, and then both teams traded pairs of free throws to make the score 93-92 for Biola.
Out of a timeout,
Darnell Robateau found Mackenzie open for his eighth made 3-pointer of the game, helping him eventually tie the tournament's single-game record, and more importantly, giving the Sea Lions a 95-93 lead with the shot clock off.
Chris Rossow tried dribbling to the right and got knocked down by Robateau, sending the tournament's leading scorer to the free throw line, where he tied the game at 95-95.
Point Loma put the ball into the hands of Mackenzie with just a few seconds left on the clock. He looked up as time winded down and then jabbed to the right before stepping back to the left and heaving a shot that banked into the hoop as zeroes showed on the clock, sending Point Loma celebrating with a 98-95 victory.
Mackenzie's game-winning shot wouldn't have taken place if it wasn't more an even more impressive late comeback during regulation for the Sea Lions. Behind a strong shooting performance by
Alex Wright, Biola had built its lead up to 13 with four minutes left when
Jesse Elrod knocked down a trey. Elrod then hit a lay-up with three minutes left to keep the lead at double digits.
The Sea Lions went on a 10-0 run in the final three minutes to send the game into overtime. The run was started by a 3-pointer from
Josh Caston. Then Mackenzie made a pair of free throws and
Sterling Somers fought hard in the paint to get a 3-point play that put the Sea Lions back within two points. The Sea Lions made two defensive stops in a row after that and then Robateau got to the free throw line where he tied the game.
In the final 30 seconds of regulation both teams got good looks at game-winning baskets but neither of them went in. That sent the game into overtime where the Sea Lions made 5 of 6 shots, including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc for a dramatic win in overtime.
Mackenzie finished with 34 points which is the second-highest single-game total in tournament history as he made 9 of 17 shots from 3-point territory. Anderson added 25 points, while Somers had a 12-point, 11-rebound double-double. Biola was led by Wright with 28 points followed by Rossow's 23 points, nine assists and six rebounds.
