INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA released today its second of three regional rankings leading up to November 15's Selection Show with three PacWest teams in the top-8 as Hawai`i Hilo entered the rankings at No. 7, while Point Loma remained No. 4 and Azusa Pacific dropped to No. 8.
This year, six teams will earn berths into the NCAA West Regional with the top-2 seeds each hosting three teams for the first two rounds. Three of the berths will be determined by the automatic qualifiers given to the PacWest, CCAA and GNAC. The remaining three playoff spots will go to the top-3 remaining teams ranked by the NCAA selection committee.
1. Seattle Pacific 13-1-1
2. Western Washington 12-3-2
3. Sonoma State 12-4-0
4. Point Loma 11-1-1
5. Northwest Nazarene 8-3-3
6. Chico State 9-2-5
7. Hawai`i Hilo 10-3-0
8. Azusa Pacific 10-4-0
Point Loma took its first loss of the year against Hawai`i Hilo last week, but still has the second-best winning percentage in the region and remained ranked fourth. Western Washington also lost once and Sonoma State lost twice last week, but all three teams stayed put in the rankings. The Sea Lions now rank fifth in RPI at .563 after going 1-1-0 last week.
Hawai`i Hilo entered the rankings thanks to last week's win over Point Loma on
Daelenn Tokunaga's golden goal for the 2-1 victory. The Vulcans' focus now will be on winning the PacWest's automatic bid, and they can do that by winning their final two matches. However, the rankings will be important for seeding should Hawai`i Hilo earn the PacWest AQ. The first of those two matches will be against Hawai`i Hilo on Sunday.
Azusa Pacific dropped in the rankings despite being one of only two teams from last week's rankings to go undefeated. Nevertheless, Chico State jumped ahead of the Cougars despite suffering a draw against Cal Poly Pomona, which is no longer ranked. The Cougars' match against Point Loma is their best chance to make a statement to the selection committee that they deserve a spot in the postseason.
Concordia remains on the outside looking in for the regional rankings. The Eagles still have a shot at winning the PacWest's automatic bid. They would have to win all four remaining matches and would need Hawai`i Hilo to lose at least one of the two remaining matches.
