Tournament Bound 'Swords Claim PacWest Awards

Conference champion Chaminade claimed four of the six special awards and five of the 12 First Team honors on the 2022 All-Pacific West Conference Volleyball Team, voted on by the league's coaches.

Alexia Byrnes was named the Player of the Year and the Setter of the Year, only the second time a person has won two special awards in one season. The other? Byrnes in 2021 as the Setter of the Year and the Newcomer of the Year.

Brynes' teammate Sasha Colombo is the Newcomer of the Year and their leader Kahala Kabalis Hoke is the Coach of the Year for the second time in a row.

Point Loma claimed the other two awards.  Courtney Dyer won her third Libero of the Year award and Abigail Nua is the Freshman of the Year.

Alexia Byrnes, the PacWest Preseason Player of the Year, had another banner year as the leader of a balanced and talented Chaminade squad. The Chicago native averaged 7.15 assists per set and had a season-high of 48 against San Francisco State. The 2021 First Team All-Region selection (AVCA and D2CCA) led the Silverswords to a 24-7 record, and over her two seasons as the "quarterback" of her team, Chaminade has gone 51-13 and won two conference titles.

Courtney Dyer is the most decorated player on the 2022 list. This is her third Libero of the Year award, the first player in PacWest history to win it three times. She was also the Preseason Libero of the Year. The 5th-year Sea Lion leaves the program with her mark on the PacWest record books, finishing tied for second in service aces with 157, just one behind the all-time mark of 158. She lists fourth in career digs with 2,272. This year, she led the PacWest in digs with 5.32 per set, almost one full dig above anyone else in the conference.

Dyer's new teammate Abigail Nua is the Freshman of the Year. The 5-10 outside hitter took the conference by storm this year, leading the league in kills (469) and kills per set (4.51). The latter total is the 12th best for a single season in PacWest history. She had a season-high 31 kills against Concordia and had 20 digs versus Azusa Pacific. Perhaps most impressive for a freshman, she had double-figure kill numbers in all but two matches for the Sea Lions, and she started in all 28 matches.

The Newcomer of the Year is Chaminade's Sasha Colombo, a 6-foot-2 grad transfer from Colorado State. The native Italian hit .308 on the season and had a season-high 18 kills against Biola, hitting .643 in that match. In that week against the southern California schools, she totaled 54 kills and was named the PacWest Player of the Week. The two-time All-Mountain West Conference selection at CSU had 71 total blocks and 30 service aces on the year.

Chaminade head coach Kahala Kabalis Hoke is the PacWest Coach of the Year after winning the conference title for the second straight time. In 2021, the trophy didn't get secured until the final day of the regular season. This year, the Silverswords claimed it with still a few matches left on the schedule. With a 19-1 conference mark, Kabalis Hoke's squad posted the best PacWest Conference record since California Baptist went 20-0 in 2017. In her 11th season at Chaminade, she is now the winningest coach in program history with a career mark of 182-118.

Byrnes, Dyer, Nua, and Columbo were also First Team All-PacWest selections. They were joined on the 12-team squad by Chaminade's Greta Corti, Lataisia Saulala and Brooklen Pe`a. It is Saulala and Pe`a's third All-PacWest selection and Corti's second. Pe`a was also the PacWest Player of the Year in 2021.

Azusa Pacific's Annaka Jorgenson makes her fourth appearance on the team and leaves the Cougar program ranked seventh all-time in the PacWest in kills with 1,368. Jorgenson's teammate Kyra Palmbush makes her second All-PacWest team, hitting .377 this year, the eighth best single-season mark in conference history.

Concordia's Kirra Schulz is a second-time selection and listed third this season in kills per set (3.58). Third-time pick Corinne Acosta of Fresno Pacific makes the First Team list, as does all-around standout Torina Hommes of Point Loma.

Counting the 13-member second team, Chaminade had seven total honorees, followed by Point Loma with four, Fresno Pacific, Biola and Holy Names with three and Azusa Pacific and Academy of Art with two.
