Biola Wins Tenth Straight, CUI's Run is at 5 in a row and PLNU's Federico Continues to Dig.

Biola has swept nine of their last ten matches, while Concordia improved to 6-0 in PacWest play with two more wins. Kira Federico goes back-to-back as the Defender of the Week.

Biola won their ninth and tenth straight matches with sweeps of Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific. Concordia won their fifth in a row behind the offense of Emma Wegleitner and Point Loma’s Kira Federico defense earns her back-to-back honors.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Biola Eagles                                                                                                                
Biola is the Team of the Week after two more home sweeps, this time with conquests of Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific. The Eagles have now won 10 matches in a row to improve to 11-2 on the season and to 6-0 in the PacWest. Nine of those 10 victories were in straight sets, and the Eagles haven’t tasted defeat since August 28. This week on offense, they hit a sizzling .383 and on defense they held opponents to a .120 attack percentage. The 10 wins is just two victories short of tying the BU school record for consecutive triumphs. Julianna Van Ommering averaged 3.83 kills per set for the Eagles and hit at a .380 clip.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Concordia’s Emma Wegleitner, OH, Jr., 5-11, Boerne, Texas                            
Concordia’s Emma Wegleitner hit a scorching .508 this week in two sweeps while averaging a whopping 5.5 kills/set and 3.5 digs/set. The junior outside hitter led all players in kills in both of Concordia's games, totaling 13 kills against Jessup while hitting .444 with eight digs and 2 blocks. She was even better against Dominican with 20 kills, 13 digs, a block and 2 service aces while hitting .563 in three sets. The second-year Golden Eagle, who was a Second Team All-PacWest pick last year, is fourth in the conference in kills per set at 3.45.

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Point Loma’s Kira Federico, DS, Sr., 5-5, Peoria, Ariz.                                   
Point Loma’s Kira Federico goes bck-to-back in the Defender of the Week category after another trio of impressive matches. The junior average 5.8 digs per set with a high of 25 digs against Jessup, the highest total in the PacWest this season in a four-set match. She added 20 digs against Hawaii Hilo and 13 more versus Dominican. The third-year Sea Lion leads the PacWest with 4.87 digs per set.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Hawaii Hilo had the win of the week, going into Golden Gym at Point Loma to sweep the Sea Lions, 3-0. Chase Koepke had 13 kills for the Vulcans, while Ila Rose had six service aces for the Sea Lions…Point Loma bounced back with wins over Jessup and Dominican. Setter Sophia Baugh directed the offense with 52 assists against the Warriors, the highest total for a 4-set match in the PacWest this year…Westmont won their lone match of the week, a 3-1 conquest of Vanguard on the road. Ceanna O’Laughlin had 22 kills for the Lions in a losing cause…Because of Hurricane Nolo, Sunday’s match between Hawaii Hilo and Hawaii Pacific was postponed. No make-up date has been announced yet.

LOOKING AHEAD: It’s a busy week in the PacWest to wrap up September and begin October. On Wednesday, Vanguard visits Point Loma, Biola is at Westmont, Jessup travels to Hawaii Pacific and Concordia welcomes CSU Los Angeles in a non-conference tilt. On Thursday, Jessup is at Chaminade, Dominican is at Hilo and Point Loma hosts Cal Poly Pomona. Friday features Vanguard at Biola and Concordia at Westmont and Saturday brings Jessup to Hilo and Dominican to Hawaii Pacific. Sunday wraps up the week with Dominican at Chaminade.
