Vulcans, Sea Lions, and a Sunbird Grab PacWest Awards

2022 Pacific West Conference champion Hawai`i Hilo claimed three of the conference's special awards, while Point Loma's name appears twice in the headlines in the annual vote by the league's coaches. The two squads also combined to list 11 of the 13 First Team All-PacWest picks.

Fresno Pacific's Tori De Leon is the PacWest Player of the Year. For the second consecutive year, Vulcans head coach Gene Okamura is the Coach of the Year, while Point Loma defensive stopper Lauren O'Malley was named the PacWest Defender of the Year for the third time.

UH Hilo freshman Lolo Retsky is the Goalkeeper of the Year and her UH Hilo teammate Grace VerHage is the Newcomer of the Year. Sea Lion forward Zoe Crockett was tabbed as the Freshman of the Year.

Gene Okamura led the Vulcans to a second straight conference title and UH Hilo's first unbeaten regular season in school history. The Vulcans, 13-0-3, are the No. 1 seed in the NCAA West Region, which is also a first for the university and the Pacific West Conference. UH Hilo will host Concordia and Cal State LA this week on Thursday and will play the winner on Saturday at the school's brand new facility on campus. In his seventh season, the Hilo native is now 52-31-18 overall. Once the coach of both the UHH men's and women's teams, since narrowing his work to just the women's squad, Okamura is 40-15-13.

Tori De Leon is the PacWest Player of the Year after scoring nine goals (three assists) for a total of 21 points. The goals and points ranked third in the PacWest this year. The fifth-year Sunbird is a First Team selection for the inaugral time in her career after earning Second Team honors in 2021. De Leon helped lead her team to a 8-7-2 overall mark and a 5-5 record in the conference, and at one point this season scored in five of six consecutive matches.

Fellow fifth-year senior Lauren O'Malley is the first player in PacWest history to win the Defender of the Year award three times. She is also a All-PacWest selection for a record fifth time, four of those times chosen to the First Team. O'Malley has anchored an outstanding Point Loma defense for five seasons, this year helping the Sea Lions hold opponents to just 16 goals in 18 matches. The Sea Lions, 12-2-4 overall and 7-1-2 in the PacWest, head to Bellingham for the NCAA West Region tournament, taking on Sonoma State on Thursday.

For the second season in a row, Hawai`i Hilo has the Goalkeeper of the Year on their team. But this time it is freshman Lolo Retsky, who had to step in for injured 2021 Goalkeeper of the Year Viviana Poli. All Retsky did was lead the PacWest in save percentage (.853), goals against average (.407) and she was second with six shutouts. In 14 matches in the goal, Retsky gave up just five points in helping lead the Vulcans to a 13-0-3 overall record, a 8-0-2 PacWest mark and conference championship.

Another first-year player for the Vulcans is the PacWest Newcomer of the Year, fifth-year senior Grace VerHage. The Ferris State grad transfer led the PacWest in scoring with 11 goals and 25 points, which included three game-winning scores. In her very first match as a Vulcan she scored twice against Cal State East Bay, and later in the season scored twice against Hawai`i Pacific. In the final match of the regular season against Azusa Pacific, the Michigan native notched a hat trick with three goals in the conference title-clinching victory. At Ferris State, she was also a leader on a conference championship team and was a NCAA Division II First Team All-Midwest Region selection.

The PacWest Freshman of the Year is Point Loma's Zoe Crockett. The rookie forward has six goals on the season and three assists (15 points). She has a knack for key moments, scoring game-winning shots four times, including in back-to-back matches against Biola and Azusa Pacific. She served notice early, scoring twice in just her second collegiate match against Cal State San Bernardino. The eastern Washington native was a key figure off the bench for the Sea Lions, starting in just four matches, playing in 16.

VerHage, De Leon, O'Malley and Retsky were First Team All-PacWest selections. They were joined by UH Hilo's Jodie Lillie (defender), a five-time selection, and second-time picks Filippa Graneld (midfielder), Alyssa Padron (MF) and Daelenn Tokunaga (MF), the 2021 PacWest Player of the Year. Lillie and O'Malley are the only players in conference history to earn All-PacWest honors five times.

Point Loma had three of the four First Team defender picks. In addition to O'Malley, Mackenzie Coleman and Emma Thrapp are on squad. Sea Lions Alana Diaz (F) and Lily Paulson (MF) were also picked by the coaches, along with Concordia's Jadenn Carrillo (F). For Carrillo, it was her fourth selection to an All-PacWest team.
