IRVINE, Calif. – Following the basketball season, Azusa Pacific has strengthened its lead in the Commissioner’s Cup standings with a score of 12.6 going into the spring season with an advantage of more than one point over Biola in second place, while Point Loma and Concordia are also in the top-4.
 
The Commissioner’s Cup is an annual award given at the end of each academic year to the institution that has the best combined performance across all 15 of the PacWest sports. The winter standings update includes the results from all five fall sports as well as men’s and women’s basketball.
 
Azusa Pacific earned 15 points in women’s basketball by winning the PacWest’s regular season title along with an additional 13 points from men’s basketball by virtue of finishing runner-up. The Cougars won the Commissioner’s Cup in 2019 and the award was cancelled each of the last two years as Azusa Pacific looks to join Hawai`i Pacific and California Baptist as the only schools to have won the cup multiple times.
 
Biola remains in second place in the standings with a score of 11.3 after the basketball season. The Eagles took third place in men’s basketball to earn 12 points. Biola’s women’s basketball team was part of a group of four teams that were locked in a tight battle for second place in the PacWest standings and the Eagles ultimately took fifth place and reached the semifinals of the PacWest Championships.
 
Point Loma has a score of 10.8 in third place after having won the PacWest title in men’s basketball. The Sea Lions won 11 games in a row to finish the regular season atop the PacWest standings. Point Loma finished in seventh place on the women’s side and provided the biggest upset at the PacWest Championships by beating No. 2 Dominican in the first round.
 
Concordia remains in fourth place in the Commissioner’s Cup standings with 10.1 points after finishing in fourth place in women’s basketball. West Region Player of the Year Michaela VanderKlugt helped the Eagles return to the PacWest Championships and broke the PacWest’s all-time rebounding record in the process.
 
Hawai`i Hilo remains in fifth place while Academy of Art has moved up to sixth place after the Urban Knights qualified both of their basketball teams for the NCAA West Regional. The Vulcans are on pace to have their best finish in the Commissioner’s Cup in over a decade.
 
Fresno Pacific is now in seventh place followed by Hawai`i Pacific. The Sunbirds had both of their basketball teams qualify for the PacWest Championships this year. Dominican has moved up to No. 9 in the standings thanks to a second-place finish in women’s basketball. Chaminade and Holy Names round out the standings at the end of the winter season.
