SURPRISE, Ariz. -- For the second year in a row, Azusa Pacific and Hawai`i Pacific will meet each other in the final of the PacWest Championships tomorrow after both teams advanced through the semifinals, respectively beating Academy of Art and Fresno Pacific, on Friday at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Club.
In the consolation matches, Biola advanced to the fifth-place match after earning a 4-2 win over Cal State LA, and will face Point Loma, which won 4-0 against Hawai`i Hilo. On Saturday, Academy of Art and Fresno Pacific will face each other for third place, while Hawai`i Hilo and Cal State LA square off for seventh place.
Hawai`i Pacific won the doubles point and three singles matches in straight sets to earn a quick win over Fresno Pacific in just one hour and 45 minutes, 4-0. After winning the doubles point,
Shaline Pipa gave the Sharks two points by winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
The Sharks won the first set on five of the six singles courts and it was a race to the finish in those singles matches.
Valentina Mokrova won her match at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-3 to give
Sanne Brull only her second loss since February. Less than a minute later,
Marlene Tilgner clinched the victory at No. 3 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win to put Hawai`i Pacific into the championship match for the 14th time in 15 years.
Azusa Pacific won against Academy of Art 4-1 and the Urban Knights made the Cougars work hard for their second semifinal win in a row at the PacWest Championships. The defending champions advanced with
Audrey Stewart making a three-set comeback to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-0.
After racing through clinching the doubles point,
Eleonora Liga dispatched her country woman
Sofia Ragona 6-2, 6-1 in a battle of two players that have been ranked in the top-10 in NCAA Division II at different points this season.
April Wong won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to give the Cougars their third point before Stewart clinched the match.
The Urban Knights got its point at No. 2 singles.
Maria Casucci has had a strong tournament and that continued with her defeating a first-team All-PacWest singles opponent in
Madison Kane, 7-6(3), 6-4.
Colbeyshae Emery earned her fourth-career singles win in the PacWest Championships as she led Biola to a win over Cal State LA, 4-2. The Eagles can strengthen their case for a berth into the NCAA West Regional for the second year in a row by winning the consolation bracket of the PacWest Championships.
Mary Brascia won her match at No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-3, and
Lilly McNeill who is no stranger to marathon matches clinched the victory, 0-6, 6-2, 7-5. Cal State LA got a win from
Berta Acero at No. 3 singles, and
Savaughna Mayo won at No. 6 singles to give the Golden Eagles their two points. Cal State LA wasn’t without its opportunities with
Chelsey Ruiz ahead by one set when the match was completed.
In the other consolation match, Point Loma advanced to set up a blockbuster rematch with Biola by defeating Hawai`i Hilo, 4-0.
Angelique Friedrich continues to dominate three-set matches this season, picking up her fifth win this season in a match that goes to a deciding set as she won 1-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Thelma Sepulveda and
Arianna Audelo each won in straight sets for the Sea Lions.
