IRVINE, Calif. -- Concordia forced a winner-take-all game in the final of the NCAA West Sub-Regional tournament hosted at Concordia, by winning the first game against Cal State Dominguez Hills, but the Toros came back to win the second game on Saturday, earning a berth into the NCAA West Regional Championship Series.
Concordia started its season with 36-consecutive wins and finished the year with a 46-10 record, which is the sixth-most wins in a season in PacWest history. It is the third-consecutive full season in which the Eagles have tallied at least 46 wins, making Concordia the only PacWest team to have done it three times.
The first game went nine innings in the highest-scoring game of the tournament. Cal State Dominguez Hills scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings. After two singles and a walk, the bases were loaded for
Kendall Flatt, who drove in the game-winning run with an infield single. A five-pitch walk after that made the score 8-6 for Concordia.
Courtney Koelmans entered the game in relief and pitched two scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth to earn the win, which was her ninth this season, improving to 9-0. She allowed just two hits and struck out two batters. In the win,
Sydney Sprinkle reached base safely four with two hits, two walks including a solo home run to go along with her RBI sacrifice bunt.
In the second game, Alyssa Olague started the game once again. In five innings of work in the first game, she had allowed five earned runs, but the second time she faced Concordia on Saturday, it was a different story. She picked up her 19th win of the season in the form of a one-hit shutout with only a single by
Megan Massa interrupting a perfect game.
The Toros won in just five innings, scoring eight runs to win on the runs rule. Cal State Dominguez Hills scored four times in the first inning to take the air out of the thrilling win by the Eagles right before. The Toros will go on to face Cal State San Marcos, which defeated Sonoma State twice to advance to the championship series on May 19-20.
