Massa, Austin Top List Of All-PacWest Selections

IRVINE, Calif. – The 2022 All-PacWest team is led by Megan Massa from Concordia and Paige Austin from Biola, who were respectively voted the Player and Pitcher of the Year for the conference, with Austin being named to the all-conference team for the fourth time, while this is Massa’s third-careers selection.

After leading her team to the PacWest title, Crystal Rosenthal is the PacWest Coach of the Year, and one of her aces Katlin Entrup has been named the PacWest Newcomer of the Year. Hawai`i Hilo also won two special awards with Skylar Thomas earning recognition as the Defensive Player of the Year, and Jayda Favela was named Freshman of the Year and the first-team shortstop.

Austin recorded a 0.74 ERA during her senior season, which tied the PacWest single-season record, wrapping up what has been a dominant career for Austin at Biola. She struck out 205 batters this year in 141 innings pitched, collecting 14 wins and two saves for the Eagles. On 10 different occasions this year, she struck out double-digit batters in a single game. She started the year with a one-hit shutout in which she struck out 17 batters. She won all of her first four starts with just one earned run allowed and had at least 10 strikeouts in all four games. She also threw two no-hitters on the season. Austin finishes her career with 777 strikeouts and 71 victories with a 1.36 ERA, having helped Biola reach the NCAA Division II Championship Game last year.

Massa led the PacWest in several offensive categories this season as she recorded a .414 batting average during the regular season. She had 67 hits, including 22 extra-base hits along with 25 walks for a .489 on-base percentage. She stole nine bases and scored 39 runs. She led Concordia in OPS at 1.069 and had a league-best 94 total bases. She had 23 multi-hit games in 51 games played.

Entrup threw just over 100 innings this year, which led Concordia’s pitching staff. As a staff, Concordia broke the PacWest single-season record for ERA, finishing the regular season at 1.01, and Entrup was a key part of that with her own 1.12 ERA. She won 15 games on the season, which led the PacWest and also made five saves as she finished the regular season with exactly 100 strikeouts.

Shortstop is one of the strongest positions in the PacWest this season, and Favela led the voting among shortstops on the All-PacWest team. She opened the season with a seven-game hitting streak and finished with a .304 batting average. She finished the season with 20 stolen bases and scored 26 runs. Late in the season, Favela went on a streak of five-consecutive games with at least one run scored.

Thomas played primarily at first base for the Vulcans, where she helped the team have a .967 fielding percentage. Thomas made 285 putouts during the season and had 14 assists. She also played a part in nine double plays. Over the course of the entire season, she was only charged with one error, which came in just the third series of the season. Thomas finished the year with a .997 fielding percentage.

Rosenthal led Concordia to the best start that a PacWest softball team has ever had, winning 36-consecutive games to start the season leading into the Tournament of Champions. Concordia earned the No. 1 ranking in the nation from the NFCA at that point. The Eagles finished the regular season with a 43-8 record and are ranked No. 2 in the West Region, which would mean Concordia could host the opening rounds of the regional once again if that ranking holds. Rosenthal reached 600 career wins this season and has now led Concordia to three-consecutive PacWest titles with a 29-3 conference record this season. Since joining the PacWest, Concordia has played 200 conference games and won 156 for the second-best conference winning percentage in PacWest history and the best among active members.

Austin along with Azusa Pacific’s Amanda Woods both earned their fourth-career All-PacWest honors. Concordia teammates Massa, Sydney Sprinkle and Erika Morris each won their third All-PacWest awards along with Lauryn Henderson from Academy of Art.

Biola had four players on the first team with Abie Nowak and Sicili Brittingham along with two-time selection Jennifer Morinishi joining Austin. Holy Names’ Lyndsey Widner was the first-team All-PacWest catcher. Azusa Pacific received two All-PacWest first-team selections with Olivia Smith in the outfield and Erica Hanson at second base.
