Four PacWest Squads Have Winning Weeks in Women's Soccer Action

The Sea Lions tied the Seawolves in a battle between two defending conference champions (and mythical sea creatures), to stay unbeaten along with Hawaii Hilo, who again used a freshman goalkeeper to keep other teams scoreless. Fresno Pacific won twice and scored eight goals in two matches to highlight another week of women’s non-conference soccer in the Pacific West Conference.

The Vulcans didn’t allow any goals during a 3-0 win over Regis and a 0-0 tie with Hawaii Pacific, sending rookie keeper Lolo Retsky to her second Defender of the Week honor. The Sunbirds’ Tori De Leon scored twice during a 6-0 win over Academy of Art and had a goal and an assist against Cal State Dominguez Hills to claim Player of the Week honors, and Point Loma earned the Team of the Week after a tie with Sonoma State and 2-0 win over Cal State LA.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Fresno Pacific’s Tori De Leon, F, 5-4, Sr., Fowler, Calif.
Fifth-year Sunbirds standout Tori De Leon scored twice during a 6-0 win over Academy of Art to help lead her team to a 2-0 week. De Leon, a Second Team All-PacWest pick last Fall, also had a foot in both scores during a 2-1 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills to give her a total of seven points on the week. Against the Toros, she scored the first goal and then notched the match-winner in the 69th minute. Versus the Urban Knights, she scored twice in a two minute span just 15 minutes into the contest. On the young season, De Leon leads the PacWest with 14 shots on goal and with four goals scored.

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Hilo’s Lolo Retsky, GK, 5-5, Fr., Calabasas, Calif.
Lolo Retsky had big shoes to fill when 2021 Defender of the Year Viviana Poli became injured, but the freshman has more than met expectations with her second weekly defender of the week award and her third consecutive shutout. Retsky had three saves during a tough road win over Regis (Colo.) 3-0, and then kept the Sharks circling in a 0-0 tie with Hawaii Pacific (four saves). On the season, Retsky leads the PacWest with a 0.40 goals against average, and tied for the conference lead with three shutouts.

NO. 7 SEA LIONS KEEP ROLLING: The PacWest Team of the Week is the Point Loma Sea Lions. PLNU hosted the defending CCAA champs and struck first on a goal by Emma Thrapp but the Seawolves scored the equalizer in the second half for the tie. Sonoma State is now 4-1-1 and came into the match ranked No. 20 in the national poll. Zoe Crockett and Alison Pepper scored in PLNU’s 2-0 win over Cal State LA (3-2-1) and Julia Pinnell had a save in the shutout as the Sea Lions remained unbeaten at 4-0-2.
