ART U Captures Weekly Women's T&F Awards

Academy of Art ruled the women’s track and field awards this week. Selena Arjona-Alcazar hit NCAA provisional marks in four events at the Stanford Invitational (two sprints and two relays). Her Urban Knight teammate Marie-Jeanne Ourega placed herself in the top D-II spot in the long jump and is second in the triple jump after bettering her marks at Stanford.

TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Academy of Art’s Selena Arjona-Alcazar, Grad., Sprints, Panama City, Panama
It was a busy Stanford Invitational for Selena Arjona-Alcazar as she set NCAA provisional qualifications in four different events. A season-best 11.63 in the 100m dash placed her fourth in the event final as well as 12th in NCAA Division II. Though it was not her fastest of the year, Arjona-Alcazar still turned in a 24.02 mark that bested the provisional standard by more than 0.30 seconds. In a pair of relays, she anchored twice as ART U took over the country’s top spot in the 4x100m with a 44.82 mark then turned in a 3:49.58 in the 4x400m, good for 18th nationally.
 
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Academy of Art’s Marie-Jeanne Ourega, Soph., Jumps, L`Hay-les-Roses, France
Improving upon both of her distances in the horizontal jumps, Marie-Jeanne Ourega used the Stanford Invitational to further her lead as the nation’s long jump leader with a 20-8 (6.30m) which put her ahead by more than two inches. In the triple jump, Ourega ascended four spots to second in NCAA DII with a 42-0.5 (12.81m) mark. Ourega has the top marks in the PacWest in both events by two feet. She also clocked 13.91 in the 100 hurdles, a provisional time. The native of France won the 2023 NCAA Indoor Championship in the long jump (20-9 ¾) and was fourth in the triple jump (42-0 ¾).

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Fresno Pacific’s Madison Flores continues to flourish in the sprints. She clocked 54.25 in the 400 meters at Fresno State, the second fastest time in the PacWest this year. She also ran leg #2 in the 4x100 relay (45.59), also second fastest in the PacWest and second all-time at FPU…Sunbird Hope Erwin moved to the top of the 2023 PacWest chart in the discus at 42.66 (139-11), shared with Concordia’s Khaiya Simpson…Biola’s Lynette Ruiz cruised to a time of 34:27.55 in the 10,000 meters at Stanford, third fastest in the country this year and better than two minutes faster than the NCAA provisional time…APU’s Alayna Verner ran 24.20 in the 200 meters, an NCAA provisional time, and placed third at the Vince Boyle…Molly Olson won the javelin at the same meet for the Cougars with a throw of 150-8, which ranks fourth nationally…Point Loma’s Aubrie Nex ran 2:12.99 in the 800 meters, bettering her previous best time in that race by over three seconds…ART U’s Lina Hanich ran a provisional time of 2:11.55 in that same event, and Concordia’s Porshe Eismann also clocked 2:12.35 in the 800 this past weekend.
 
IT's PACWEST CHAMPIONSHIPS MONTH: The pinnacle of the track and field season looms—The Pacific West Conference Championships, set for April 28-29 in Azusa at the Cougar Athletic Stadium. Six men’s teams and seven women’s will compete for the PacWest trophy, which has been won the last six seasons on BOTH the men’s and women’s side by host Azusa Pacific.

LOOKING AHEAD: Everyone is scheduled to be in action this coming weekend, with Concordia competing at UC San Diego, Dominican and Academy of Art are at California Berkeley, with Azusa Pacific, Biola, and Fresno Pacific schedule to compete at Pomona-Pitzer. Dominican will also send athletes to CS East Bay and to Chabot CC.
