Freshman Sensation McClinton and CUI Dominate PacWest Awards

The 2023 All-PacWest Softball Team has plenty of repeat selections from a year ago and one pick that repeated twice—this year.

Biola freshman Colby McClinton earned two awards, three actually, in the list voted on by the conference’s coaches. McClinton is the PacWest Player of the Year, the PacWest Freshman of the Year and she also was named First Team shortstop. The last person to garner three awards in one sitting was Concordia pitcher Callie Nunes (2018) when she was the Pitcher of the Year, Freshman of the Year and First Team All-PacWest.

Speaking of Concordia, the conference champion Golden Eagles took home three special awards. Crystal Rosenthal is a repeat pick as Coach of the Year, pitcher Daniela Alvarez is the Newcomer of the Year and Katlin Entrup is the Pitcher of the Year. Hawaii Hilo claimed the Defensive Player of the Year with infielder Trinity Favela.

Colby McClinton took the conference by storm this season after arriving from Oahu, where she prepped at Kamehameha-Kapalama. She started every game at shortstop for the Eagles (47) and led the conference in hitting with a sizzling .477 average. She had the highest on-base percentage in the PacWest (.559), led the league in hits (72), was second in runs scored (44), third in triples (5) and fourth in stolen bases (16). She also had 12 doubles and 26 runs batted in.

Katlin Entrup, who was the PacWest Newcomer of the Year in 2022, had another outstanding season in helping lead Concordia to the conference title. Entrup had a brilliant 15-3 win-loss record and a 0.81 ERA. She had eight complete games for a deep Golden Eagle pitching roster. In 120.2 innings pitched, she gave up only 72 hits, struck out 112, and gave up only two home runs all season. Opponents hit just .172 against her, tops in the conference.

Entrup shared the conference lead in ERA with her teammate, Newcomer of the Year Daniella Alvarez. Alvarez arrived in Irvine from Providence College, and put together a 10-3 record and that 0.81 ERA. In 95 innings pitched, the Santa Ana native allowed 73 hits, fanned 86, gave up just one home run all year and held opponents to a .204 batting average.

For the second straight season, Hawaii Hilo had the Defender of the Year. This time it was senior Trinity Favela, the Vulcans’ second baseman (last year it was first baseman Skylar Thomas). The fifth-year Vulcan, who also played at the University of Hawaii and Saint Martin’s, hit .282 on the season but made her mark defensively. She had a .975 fielding percentage, but perhaps most remarkably she did not make an error in the final 33 games of her career. She had a total of five errors on the season, three of them in one game. But after that rough day, she didn’t make another miscue the rest of the season.

Crystal Rosenthal is the PacWest Coach of the Year for the second season in a row. Her Golden Eagles won the regular season title weeks ago and are the No. 1 seed in this week’s PacWest Tournament. Currently ranked No. 1 in the NCAA West Region, Concordia is also 12th in the latest NFCA National poll. Concordia heads into the tournament with a 42-10 overall record and they were 27-5  in the PacWest. Rosenthal directed her squad to their fourth PacWest title and she is now 648-164-2 in 15 seasons at Concordia.

There were a number repeat selections on the All-PacWest First, Second and Third teams. Concordia’s Sydney Sprinkle and Megan Massa were tabbed for the fourth time in their careers, both named First Team this season. Hawaii Pacific’s Noel (Tito) Saunders was a third-time selection as an outfielder, as was Biola’s Jennifer Morinishi. Dominican pitcher Shelby Keltner made the All-PacWest team for the third time.

Concordia had four players on the First Team, Biola had three, Azusa Pacific two, Hawaii Pacific two and Chaminade had one. Biola’s Raylene Roybal was selected twice, as a First Team outfielder and a Second Team pitcher.
