Five PacWest Teams Sweep Opening MBB Weekend

Sea Lions, Eagles, 'Swords, Golden Eagles and Sharks go 2-0. CUH's Last pours in 24.5 ppg, DUC's Ilunga pulls down 11.5 rebounds a contest.

PacWest teams went 14-9 on the first official men's basketball weekend against mostly teams from the GNAC and CCAA. Chaminade's Jackson Last paced his team to a 2-0 mark with 24.5 points per game on .586 shooting, while Dominican's Nathan Ilunga earns the Defender of the Week with 22 rebounds.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Chaminade's Jackson Last, Grad., G, 6-5, 195, Hurricane, Utah            
Chaminade's Jackson Last had a very impressive Silversword debut at home last week against GNAC schools Alaska and Alaska Anchorage. The grad transfer from Robert Morris averaged 24.5 points a game, shooting a hot .586 from the field, including 7-of-14 markmanship from 3-point range. The 6-5 guard had 25 points in a 104-96 overtime win over the Nanooks, scoring most of his points over the back half of the contest to help CUH rally back. He also had eight rebounds in that game. He had 24 points and five boards in a 91-69 blowout of the Seawolves. Both scoring totals were collegiate bests.

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Dominican's Nathan Ilunga, Sr., F, 6-8, 230, Lubumbashi, Congo    
Dominican's Nathan Ilunga, like Jackson Last, had an impressive debut with his new team during the first weekend of the season. The City of San Francisco College transfer pulled down 11.5 rebounds in a pair of split of games for the Penguins, grabbing nine during a 84-69 win over Sonoma State and 14 versus San Francisco State in a 78-75 overtime loss. He had a double-double against the Gators with 11 points and just missed the same against the Seawolves with 10 points. 

TEAMS OF THE WEEK: Point Loma, Biola, Chaminade, Concordia and Hawaii Pacific                
During a grand opening weekend when five PacWest teams went 2-0 with not much to separate them, it was a perfect time to crown them all. That group of five outscored their opponents by a whopping 109 points, topping teams from the GNAC (Chaminade and Hawai`i Pacific) and the CCAA (Point Loma, Biola and Concordia). Point Loma topped Stanislaus State and CS East Bay, while Concordia and Biola beat CS San Marcos and CS Los Angeles. The Hawaii schools took care of Alaska and Alaska Anchorage. The wins over CSULA by Biola and Concordia may have been most impressive, as the Golden Eagles were picked to finish third in the basketball strong CCAA.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Biola raced to a 46-33 halftime lead during their win over CS Los Angeles. Casey Cappo had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds...Academy of Art's Isaiah Williams averaged 17.5 points per game this week with a high of 24 against San Francisco State on 6-for-11 shooting...Joseph Locandro had 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting in Concordia's win over CS San Marcos. Kaden Minter had 21 points for the Golden Eagles against CSULA...Point Loma went to 4-0 with their 68-61 over Stanislaus State behind 21 points from Coby Barnes...Against Chico State, Azusa Pacific's Ethan Speaker had 20 points and nine rebounds in the 81-78 win. In a 66-58 loss to Cal Poly Pomona, Maui Sze had 20 points and eight assists for the Cougars...Sherman Brasher put up 27 points and nine boards in Hawaii Pacific's 80-67 win over Alaska...Jessup's Aydan Janssan had a line of 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists in their 59-58 win over sister school Jessup-Multnomah...Against a strong Montana State Billings squad, Westmont's Adrian McIntyre had 28 points, ten rebounds and six assists in the 79-75 loss.

THIS WEEK: 21 games are on the robust slate this week, beginning today with a rematch between Alaska and Chaminade. On Thursday, Biola takes on defending regional champ CS San Bernardino.
