17 Players Repeat as PacWest All-Conference Selections

WSOC team is loaded with veteran award winners, including back-to-back POY winner Arakawa, DOY Thrapp. and COY Kiely.

IRVINE, Calif.—For Pacific West Conference soccer fans and coaches, the 2024 All-PacWest women’s soccer team looks very familiar.

17 players on this year’s list are earning at least their second all-conference honor, including ten First-Team members. Additionally, two special award winners are repeat honorees—Player of the Year Teani Arakawa and Defender of the Year Emma Thrapp.

Maybe that’s what happens when you have a strong, veteran laden conference that also happens to house four of the top five teams in the latest NCAA West Region rankings.

Hawai`i Hilo’s Teani Arakawa is the Player of the Year for the second year in a row. The senior forward, who was also the 2023 West Region Player of the Year, leads the PacWest this year eight goals scored (conference matches), has five game winners, six assists and 22 points. The Hawai`i native has 78 career points on 30 goals and 18 assists, fourth all-time in the PacWest.

Emma Thrapp is the Defender of the Year again for Point Loma. That gives the Sea Lions five straight Defender of the Year honors after Lauren O’Malley won the award from 2020-22. Thrapp led the stingy Point Loma defense to ten shutouts and a 0.18 goals against average in PacWest play. The 2023 All-American and NCAA Championships MVP led PLNU in minutes played with 1,349.

PLNU coach Kristi Kiely was a repeat winner as Coach of the Year. The defending national champs defended their PacWest crown in what might be the toughest D2 women’s conference in the country. The Sea Lions are 13-2-1 overall heading into tomorrow PacWest Championships as the No. 1 seed (they were 10-1 in league play). Point Loma has won or shared five PacWest titles in the last six seasons.

Point Loma’s Julia Pinnell shared the Goalkeeper of the Year award with Concordia’s Riley Urquiza. Pinnell had 11 shutouts in 16 matches and had a 0.18 GAA in conference matches. She has not allowed a goal in 22 of her last 27 starts over two years. Urquiza’s GAA is 0.39 and she led the PacWest with a .857 save percentage. The junior only allowed six goals all season.

Hawai`i Hilo had the Newcomer of the Year in Savina Zamborini. The fifth-year senior is a transfer from DI Louisville and made an immediate impact from the midfield. She had two goals and two assists and scored the game winner in a 1-0 win over Chaminade.

Rounding out the special awards is Freshman of the Year Priya Torres of Point Loma. Coming off the bench, Torres was third on the Sea Lions in points with eight. She scored both goals in PLNU’s 2-0 win over Hawai`i Pacific and scored the game winner against Chaminade. The Moorpark, Calif. native had assists in two of Point Loma’s last three matches.

Arakawa, Thrapp, Pinnell and Urquiza were also First Team selections. They are joined by Point Loma’s Naomi Ellis, who became just the second five-time all-conference selection in conference history (O’Malley is the other). Fellow Sea Lions Bethany Arabe, Alana Diaz and Thrapp won their fourth all-league certificates, as did Hawai`i Hilo’s Alyssa Padron.

Diaz led Point Loma in scoring this year with five goals, six assists and 16 points. She recorded a goal or an assist in six of PLNU’s 11 conference contests. The senior now has 24 career goals, tied for eighth all-time in the PacWest. Arabe had four winning goals this season and five total and was second on the squad in points with 12. She is a three-time All-PacWest First Team selection.

Ellis, the Elite 90 award winner at the 2023 NCAA Championships, has started every match of her college career in the back row. She helped pace the defense to a 1.00 GAA average. Ellis was a 2023 First Team All-West Region selection. Padron won her fourth all-conference award and back-to-back First Team honors. The senior midfielder had four goals and four assists in conference matches this year.

Concordia’s Olivia Ocampo won her fourth award, again leading the Golden Eagle defense that was one of the toughest to score on in the nation. Westmont’s Amelia Villa won her second conference award as a midfielder, this time with five goals and six assists.

Rounding out the First Team was Concordia’s Hailey Havican (10 goals and 25 points), Azusa Pacific’s Jaci Maze (10 goals, three assists), Point Loma’s Zoe Crockett (playing her first season as a defender) and Concordia defender Madison Hall, who played the full 90 minutes in 14 of CUI’s 16 matches.

Hawai`i Hilo Filippa Graneld, a Second Team selection this year, won her fourth all-conference award.

The Vulcans will take on Concordia tomorrow (Thursday) in the late conference tournament match (6:30 pm), while Point Loma will face Westmont at 4 pm.
