PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Point Loma's Abigail Nua, Sr., OH, 5-10, Lakewood, Colo.
Point Loma's Abigail Nua helped her Sea Lion team move into first place in the PacWest standings by a half-game with a couple of wins on Oahu over the weekend. Point Loma improved to 7-0 in conference play with a 5-set win over Chaminade and a 4-set conquest of Hawaii Pacific. Against the Sharks, Nua rained down 25 kills in just four sets, the third highest total in the conference this year. It was the 2024 PacWest Player of the Year's third highest kill total this season. She put down 20 more with 11 digs in the marathon win over the Silverswords. This is Nua's 12th all-time PacWest Player of the Week award and she now trails Shih Teng Chin of BYU Hawaii by only one (13).
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Hawai`i Hilo's Isabella Freeman, MB, Soph., 6-3, Lehi, Utah
Hawai`i Hilo's Isabella Freeman earned her second Defender award in the last three weeks while contributing to a pair of Vulcan wins. The 6-foot-3 middle had a PacWest season high 10 block assists in a 3-set win over Westmont. That total ties for the most block assists for any length of match and is the 3-set high for the year. She had one solo block in that total against the Warriors and totaled 12 block assists for the week with UHH also sweeping Concordia in three sets. The Utah native is by far the PacWest leader in blocks per set (1.33), block assists (107), total blocks (121) and solo blocks (14).
TEAM OF THE WEEK: Point Loma Sea Lions
Point Loma is the Team of the Week after two Oahu wins moved them into first place by a half-game over Fresno Pacific. The Sea Lions improved to 7-0 in conference playand 18-2 overall after a 3-1 victory over Hawaii Pacific and an epic 3-2 win over Chaminade. The match against the Silverswords took a marathon 2.5 hours to complete, with each team trading sets before the Sea Lions prevailed 15-10 in the fifth set. The victory for the No. 5 nationally ranked Sea Lions was their fifth straight and handed Chaminade (6-2) just their second loss in conference play. Abigail Nua had 45 total kills in the two matches and setter Sophia Baugh had 95 total assists, including 51 against the Sharks.
