Sea Lions Move to Title Match

Point Loma tops Hawai`i Hilo 3-0 to move into Saturday's championship versus Dominican.

SAN DIEGO--Kylie Garcia scored twice and her Point Loma teammates kept Hawai`i Hilo scoreless during a 3-0 Pacific West Conference semifinal victory on Thursday afternoon at the PLNU soccer field.

That vaults the No. 3 Sea Lions into Saturday's championship (noon) against No. 4 Dominican, who upset No. 1 seed Azusa Pacific earlier today. Point Loma will take a 9-3-5 record into that match. Hawai`i Hilo's season ends at 8-3-6.

Garcia, the PacWest Freshman of the Year, scored in the 28th minute and 48th to give the Sea Lions all the scoring that they would need. The first came on a left-footed cross and her second goal was a high arching header off a pass from Jenna Bisset. The Sea Lions added insurance in the 66th miinute when Zoe Crockett headed a pass from Grace Nelson into the goal.

On defense, Julia Pinnell had three saves against the Vulcan offense. One of those saves was a leaping catch of a dangerous shot in the first half.

The Vulcans and Sea Lions have had some epic matches in the past few years, including this year's 1-1 tie in Hilo and last season's PacWest title match that PLNU won in overtime, 3-2.

"It is always a really hard match, I respect Gene (Okamura) so much," said Point Loma coach Kristy Kiely after the match. "They are always well prepared. But I was really proud with how we played today. We were patient and swung the ball well. For us, it was a win or go home match and we stepped up big."

Point Loma had 19 shots and Hilo had nine. The Sea Lions had five corner kicks to the Vulcans' one.
