SANTA BARBARA— Inaka Santamarina scored twice as did
Cole Friesen to lead No. 1 seed
Point Loma a 4-1 victory over
Hawaii Hilo in the Pacific West Conference Men’s Soccer Championship on Saturday at La Playa Stadium.
The Sea Lions earn the PacWest’s automatic berth into the NCAA Super Region 4 tournament. Hawai`i, ranked 12
th in this week’s ranking, will have to now wait for Monday’s NCAA Selection Show to see if they made the field.
Point Loma takes a 15-3-1 record into the postseason, while Hawaii Hilo sits at 11-5-2.
The Sea Lions built a 2-0 halftime lead on Santamarina’s first score at 14:18 and Friesen’s goal at 43:30. Friesen assisted on the first score to help give the PacWest regular season champs a cushion at the break.
Just after Santamarina’s first score, Hilo lost their goalkeeper for the remainder of the contest with a red card after a hard tackle.
That lead held until very, very late in the contest. Hawaii Hilo made it interesting with a goal in the 86
th minute when
Lukas Stark drilled a shot high and center into the back of the net. The Vulcans then had another opportunity late in the match but the shot banged off the post and Point Loma countered the opposite way into a short defense.
Friesen added another score at 87:44 as did Santamarina at 88:53 into an empty goal to make the scoring margin greater than the game played.
Point Loma held a slight shot edge at 15-13 and had eight shots on goal to Hilo’s four.
Zack Mercieca had two assists for the Sea Lions.
Friesen was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament and PLNU's
Gael Ruiz was the Most Valuable Defender.
