Sea Lions Keep Hold on to No. 1 Spot

Point Loma holds the top spot in the NCAA West Region volleyball poll. Fresno Pacific is No. 4, Hawai`i Hilo checks in at No. 9

INDIANAPOLIS--Point Loma held serve and is again the No. 1 listed team in this week's NCAA West Region volleyball poll, announced today by the national office.

With only the selection show looming on Monday, Nov.24 (4:30 PT), the Sea Lions are sitting in the driver's seat to host the regional tournament the week after Thanksgiving. Still to come though are conference tournaments this week in the Pacific West Conference and the California Collegiate Conference, where shuffling could most definitely unfold.

The Sea Lions lost one match in the final week of the regular season, but also topped previously No. 2 Fresno Pacific on Saturday to hold their spot. The Sunbirds dropped from that second spot to fourth, but are still in a solid position to be playing in December. Hawai`i Hilo is ninth, so sitting just outside the final eight spots that will play in the postseason and will need a very productive PacWest tournament to bolster their chances.

Ultimately, the conference tournament champions from the PacWest and the CCAA, along with the regular season winner from the GNAC, will gain automatic NCAA tournament berths, and the next five teams selected will come from this final list for an eight-team tournament.

Here is today's ranking, with records against Division II opponents listed.

1. Point Loma (23-2)
2, Alaska Anchorage (21-5)
3. Simon Fraser (18-4)
4. Fresno Pacific (23-1)
5. Alaska Fairbanks (21-5)
6. Western Washington (18-5)
7. Central Washington (17-6)
8. Cal Poly Pomona (19-5)
9. Hawai`i Hilo (20-8)
10. CSU San Bernardino (20-5)
