It's Nua Again But Lots of Other New Faces in PacWest VB

Point Loma's Abigail Nua is the repeat Player of the Year as the Sea Lions, Sunbirds, Silverswords and Vulcans split the rest of the special awards.

A very familiar name in Pacific West Conference volleyball is the 2025 Player of the Year, Abigail Nua, the Point Loma star who also won the award in 2024 and is a four-time first team all-conference selection.

But after that, there are new names splashed across the PacWest special awards and the first and second teams. Other than Nua, there are six new entries for the top awards, and only four repeat first teamers and just three second team honorees.

Co-Champion Fresno Pacific has three top shelf selections in Coach of the Year Kelsee Montagna, Setter of the Year Mikayla Weiss and Co-Freshman of the Year Medelyn Feramisco. Point Loma has the Libero of the Year in Macy Reynolds, Chaminade is represented by Co-Freshman Lillie Hinton and Hawai`i Hilo has the Newcomer of the Year, Malu Garcia.

The those four schools are all in Honolulu right now for the 2025 Pacific West Conference Championship Tournament. That tips off tomorrow (Thursday) with No.1 seed Point Loma playing No. 4 Hawaii Hilo (6:30 PT) and No. 2 Fresno Pacific taking on No. 3 and host Chaminade (9:30 pm PT).

Point Loma's Abigail Nua was a pretty easy pick for Player of the Year, despite missing the final six matches of the regular season with an injury. It is the 5-foot-10 senior outside hitter's second straight POY and she has four consecutive First Team selections. The only other player in PacWest history to back-to-back MVP awards is BYU Hawai`i's Shih Ting Chen, who was selected by the league's coaches four straight times from 2011-15.

Nua, a First Team All-American in 2024, led the PacWest this fall in kills with 4.94 per set and points with 5.57 per game. Both totals were by far the most in the conferece, and ranks third and second respectively nationally. The Colorado native also had the highest kill total on the year with 30 against West Texas A&M. She now totals 1,537 career kills and counting, which ranks sixth in the PacWest career record book.

The PacWest Coach of the Year is Fresno Pacific's Kelsee Montagna. Under Montagna's direction, the Sunbirds went an astounding 23-0 before losing their final regular season match in five sets at Point Loma. They are co-PacWest champs for the first time since joining the conference and will very likely make their first NCAA tournament appearance as well. Montagna, in just her second year as the Sunbird leader, took a team that went 13-16 in 2023 and turned the program around last year with a 18-10 record and third place finish. This year, the Sunbirds were picked to finish fifth in the coaches preseason poll.

The Sunbirds' Mikayla Weiss is the Setter of the Year. The FPU grad transfer from Fresno State averaged 9.25 assists per set, but her value extended far beyond setting up her team for points. She had 14 double-doubles on the year and even had a triple-double against Menlo with 10 kills, 10 digs and 26 assists. Her season high for assists also came against the Oaks with 53. Her 9.25 assists per set and her .398 hitting percentage were both third in the conference. She started every match for the Sunbirds and during the season surpassed the 1,000 career assist mark between her time at Fresno State and Fresno Pacific.

Point Loma's Macy Reynolds is the Libero of the Year. The senior from Florida led the PacWest in digs per set by a large margin with 5.01, which also ranked in the top 30 nationally. She had double-digit dig totals in 25 of Point Loma's 26 matches, including season high's of 32 against Biola and Fresno Pacific (the total against the Eagles came in just four sets.). The fourth-year Sea Lion now has 1,068 career digs, despite missing most of 2024 recovering from an injury.

Hawai`i Hilo's Malu Garcia is the PacWest Newcomer of the Year. The transfer from the University of Iowa was a huge part in the Vulcans' tournament qualification, listing second in the PacWest in total kills with 360 and third in points with 434.5. The sophomore had a season-best 23 digs against Alaska Anchorage and posted 18 kills versus CSU East Bay. Garcia, a Hilo native, had 13 double-doubles on the year, and the all-around player twice had seven block assists in a match.

The Freshman of the Year award was shared by two. Chaminade's Lillie Hinton led the Silverswords in kills per set (2.57) and was a key cog in CUH's rebuild this year. The Texas native had 17 kills and five blocks against regionally ranked Alaska, and had 16 kills and three blocks versus Point Loma. Hinton missed two weeks of the season, but still put up 242 kills and 147 digs in 2025. Fresno Pacific's Madelyn Feramisco started in every match this year for the co-champion Sunbirds and finished the regular season with 222 kills (second on the team) and 194 digs. She had 15 kills and 21 digs in the season finale against Point Loma. The local product (Clovis) had a season-best 19 kills against Jessup.

Nua, Weiss, Reynolds and Garcia were all First Team selections. Joining that foursome among the top 12 players in the conference on First Team were Fresno Pacific's Cambra Waites and Geneva Elliott, Point Loma's Sophia Baugh and Jill Leslie, Biola's Kendall Vandertuig, Hawaii Hilo's Isabella Freeman, Vanguard's Adeline Galvanoni and Jessup's Addie Hamilton. Baugh, Waites and Galvanoni are repeat selections from a year ago.

On the Second Team, PLNU's Saren Rogers is a repeat pick as is the Concordia duo of Caitlin Jarrell (2023) and Kayden Croy.
