Point Loma Wins Showdown with Penguins

The Sea Lions held off Dominican, earning Team of the Week while PLNU's Izzy Navarro stood out as Player of the Week. Westmont's Lisa Kiefer is Defender of the Week (again.)

It was a short week in Pacific West Conference women’s basketball but the outstanding performances were anything but light. Point Loma won two more games to improve to 4-0 in conference play and 8-2 overall behind the overall play of Izzy Navarro. Westmont also remained unbeaten in league action (3-0) by beating Biola, with Lisa Kiefer providing the defense for the third week in a row.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Point Loma’s Izzy Navarro, G, Jr., 5-8, Tijuana, Mexico                              
Point Loma’s Izzy Navarro shot, passed and stole her way to this week’s Player of the Week honors. The former Concordia standout totaled 33 points, 14 assists, seven steals and ten rebounds to lead the Sea Lions to wins over Biola (61-74) and Dominican (76-71). In the victory over previously unbeaten Dominican, Navarro had 19 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and three steals. Against the Eagles, the two-time All-PacWest selection and 2024 PacWest Freshman of the Year had 14 points, five assists and four steals. On the season, Navarro lists second in the PacWest in steals (3.2) and assists (5.6), and is sixth in scoring (13.2).
 
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Westmont’s Lisa Kiefer, F, Sr., 6-2, Marburg, Germany                           
Westmont’s Lisa Kiefer is the Defender of the Week for the THIRD week in a row after contributing greatly to the Warriors’ win over Biola. The 6-foot-2 post pulled down ten boards, had six steals and blocked a shot in Westmont’s 68-49 victory to help her team improve to 3-0 in conference play and 7-2 overall. This is the seventh Defender of the Week award for Kiefer in just a one season and few weeks, which ranks second all-time on the PacWest list. The German native leads the league in rebounds (10.8), is fifth in blocks (1.6) and seventh in steals (2.7).

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Point Loma is the Team of the Week after two victories to improve to 8-2 on the season and 4-0 in the PacWest. The Sea Lions opened the week with a 61-47 win over Biola led by Izzy Navarro’s 14 points, five assists and four steals, Hannah Golan’s ten points, nine rebounds and two steals, along with Eiley Tippins’ ten points, seven boards, three steals and a block. PLNU used 19 fourth quarter points to pull away from the Eagles. In the showdown against Dominican, Point Loma built a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter and then held on as the Penguins made it very close down the stretch. Navarro had big numbers again (see POW), supported by Golan’s near double-double of ten points and nine rebounds and Tippins’ 13 points.
 
PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Hawai`i Hilo won an island clash with Hawai`i Pacific, taking out the Sharks 68-63. Mindy Kawaha had 15 points while Brooke Samura just missed a double-double with nine points and ten rebounds. HPU’s Alana Roberts had 15 points and seven boards…In Westmont’s win over Biola, Jazmyn Shipp had 17 points and six rebounds while Mariah Brown added 13 points and six assists. Laney Grider led Biola with 15 points…In Point Loma’s Game of the Week win over Dominican, the Penguins were led by Keyonee Neal’s 18 points and Kaylyn Buchanon’s 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
