'Swords, Sea Lions and Golden Eagles Open PacWest Play 2-0

Tyus Parrish-Tillman puts up big numbers for Biola for POW and Andre Norris fills the stat sheet for Jessup for Defensive Player of the Week.

Chaminade, Concordia and Point Loma opened up PacWest play last week with two wins apiece to share the Team of the Week honors. Biola’s Tyus Parrish-Tillman had career-high numbers for the Eagles for Player of the Week and Jessup’s Andre Norris stole his way to Defender of the Week with 10 steals, 21 rebounds and 24 points.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Biola’s Tyus Parrish-Tillman, F, 6-8, 230, Jr., Fresno, Calif.                         
Biola’s Tyus Parrish-Tillman had a career-high 27 points and five blocked shots as the Eagles topped Jessup 84-81 in overtime. He also had a double-double against Fresno Pacific with 14 points and ten rebounds as BU split their PacWest openers. For the week, the Fresno native had 41 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists and eight blocked shots. He shot 50 percent from the field (14-for-28) and hit 4-of-9 three-pointers.
 
DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Jessup’s Andre Norris, G, 6-4, 190, Sr., Fort Worth, Tex.                       
Jessup’s Andre Norris led the Warriors on both ends of the court last weekend. The Texas native had a double-double in a near upset of defending champ Point Loma with 14 rebounds and 12 points, and also had six steals with seven rebounds and 12 points against Biola. The 6-foot-4 guard, a transfer from Hawaii Hilo, had 10 steals, 21 rebounds and 24 points on the week.

TEAM(S) OF THE WEEK: Point Loma, Concordia and Chaminade share the Team of the Week, with all three opening the conference season with a pair of wins. Point Loma went on the road to win an overtime thriller against Jessup (89-87), and then took out Fresno Pacific (85-63). Jaden Matingou had 25 points against Jessup and Jake Lifgren hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for the win. Concordia defeated Westmont (72-61) and Azusa Pacific (80-76), using McCarhy Morris’ 20 points in each game with 13-of-14 accuracy from the free throw line, along with Marcellus Edwards work against the Cougars with five steals, six rebounds and 22 points. Chaminade got an early leg up on the Hawaii schools with narrow wins over Hawaii Pacific (71-68) and Hawaii Hilo (83-79). Nathan Medina hit six treys against the Vulcans for 23 points and Kent King had 17 points and nine boards against the Sharks.
 
PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Vanguard won its lone game of the week with a 73-69 verdict over Menlo behind Erik Howlin’s 24 points…In that wild Point Loma win at Jessup, Tyce Paulsen scored TWO three-pointers in the final moments to send the game to overtime. His second came off a steal on the inbounds pass after his first trey. He hit six three’s in the game for 24 points…Quinton McCullough had 17 points and 14 rebounds in Hawaii Pacific’s loss to Chaminade…Dominican was idle last week, and will take a 5-1 record into a Tuesday match-up at Division I Cal…No. 12 nationally ranked Point Loma is 7-1 overall, Vanguard is 5-2, Hawaii Pacific 4-2, Concordia 5-3 and Biola is 4-3. Chaminade is 4-4, with three of those four losses coming to D-I squads at the Maui Classic.
 
WHAT’S NEXT: It’s a lighter week, beginning with Dominican’s trip to Berkely to take on Cal on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Point Loma is at Biola, and Saturday’s slate features Dominican at Point Loma, Biola at Westmont and Hawaii Hilo is at Hawaii Pacific.
