Sunbirds Stay on Tennis Roll

Fresno Pacific wins two more, while Concordia and Point Loma both grind out 4-3 wins over No. 2 nationally ranked CMS (D3).

Fresno Pacific is off to a 3-0 start and earned the PacWest Team of the Week award for the second Monday in a row. The Sunbirds beat PacWest squads Westmont and Jessup to go 2-0 on the week. Meanwhile, Concordia and Point Loma both won 4-3 thrillers against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, with clinching play coming from Adam Large (CUI) and David Fisinger (PLNU) to secure the wins.

Co-PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Concordia's Adam Large, Grad., 6-0, Fullerton, Calif.                                
Concordia's Adam Large won at No. 2 doubles and also at No. 3 singles to help propel the Golden Eagles to a 4-3 win over Division III powerhouse Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Large teammed with Max Renz for a dramatic 7-6 (7-4) win in doubles and then provided the clinching point on court three in singles with a 6-3, 6-2 victory. The Golden Eagles split the singles matches with the 2024 D3 national runner-ups. Large, a graduate student, did not play last year but has been on the CUI roster since 2022 when he was ranked as high as eighth in the west region in singles.

Co-PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Point Loma's David Fisinger, Fr., 5-10, Munich, Germany                        
Point Loma's David Fisinger played a role very similar to Concordia's Adam Large in helping the Sea Lions to a hard fought 4-3 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The freshman from Germany teammed with Andrew Suver to take the clinching doubles point against the Stags 7-5 on court two, and then also wrapped up the team scoring with a 7-6, 6-4 victory in singles on court five. Fisinger is now 4-0 in singles play (all wins in straight sets) and 4-0 in doubles. 

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Fresno Pacific Sunbirds                                                                                                        
Fresno Pacific is now 3-0 and winners of the PacWest Team of the Week for the second week in a row. After beating Biola to open their season, the Sunbirds kept the ride going in week two with victories over Westmont (7-0) and Jessup (4-0). Ravi Nelson went 2-0 in singles on court one and won a doubles match, same story for No. 3 Sunbird Cedric Kaufman. It's the best start for FPU since 2013, when the Sunbirds began at 5-0. Fresno Pacific dropped the program one year after that and did not play from 2015-21.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Defendering conference champ Azusa Pacific defeated Hope International last week to improve to 5-0...Biola topped Westmont (6-1) in a PacWest match-up...MSU Denver split a pair of 4-3 matches in Nebraska, falling to Nebraska-Kearney and defeating Rockhurst...Colorado Mesa went 2-1 during a trip to Arizona, beating Ottawa (4-0) and Arizona Christian (4-3), while falling to Western New Mexico (4-2)...Azusa Pacific is No. 10 in the preseason ITA national poll (mid January) and Hawai`i Pacific is No. 20. APU also has four players ranked in the Top 50 in singles with Emilio Elias Walter at No. 9, Soeren Grandke (26), Joan Crespo (37) and David James Brownlee (44). Hawaii Pacific has Julius Hell (40) and Adam Visir (41). In doubles, Concordia's duo of Max Mueller and Felix Veyhle check in at No. 8 and Point Loma's David Fisinger and Andrew Suver are No. 18.

THIS WEEK: A dozen matches are slated this week, starting with Monday's Menlo at Jessup bout. Wednesday features two huge match-ups, with Azusa Pacific traveling to Fresno Pacific while Concordia visits Point Loma. On Friday, Colorado Mesa will play Hastings (Neb.) and Nebraska-Kearney, MSU-Denver is at Colorado Christian, Hawaii Pacific hosts Eastern Washington and Jessup is at UC Davis. On Saturday Biola is at Point Loma, CMU is at Rockhurst, Azusa Pacific is at Concordia in another big bout and Westmont hosts California Lutheran. To see the complete schedule, click here.
