SAN RAFAEL, Calif.--No. 1 seed Point Loma used a 10-2 run in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to pull away from Westmont on Friday afternoon in a Pacific West Conference semifinal game at the Conlan Center, 62-51.
The Sea Lions advance to the conference title game on Saturday at 2 pm against host Dominican, who earlier today defeated No. 2 seed Azusa Pacific, 62-56.
These two teams met less than a week ago in San Diego in a low scoring win by Point Loma, 57-39. Today's game began with the opposite pace.
There were eight lead changes in the first quarter and five ties before the ten minutes ended with Point Loma leading 16-15. Neither team led by more than three points in the period.
It was a slower offensive pace in the second quarter but still uber close. There were nine lead changes before the Sea Lions went into the locker room up 26-23 at the break. Bailey Fong had 15 points for the Warriors at halftme.
Point Loma led 39-34 at the end of the third quarter, but then took control immediately in the fourth. The Sea Lions went on a 6-0 run in the first two minutes and stretched that to 10-2 three minutes in. Eiley Tippins had six points during that run.
Moments later, an Alli McDonald trey made it a 14-point lead for PLNU at 52-38. Westmont would cut that margin to six points twice, but could get no closer.
The Warriors season ends at 18-11, while Point Loma improves to 24-5. Fong finished with 21 points for the Warriors on 5-of-8 accuracy from behind the arch. Lisa Kiefer had a double-double for Westmont with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
McDonald and Jocelyn Pascual led a balanced Sea Lion attack with 10 points each.
