Eagles Storm Back for PacWest Lead

Biola, trailing by 5 shots after the first round, roars back with a second day blitz to lead by 10 shots with 18 holes to play.

LAS VEGAS, Nev.--Defending champion and preseason favorite Biola showed their mettle on Tuesday afternoon with a sizzling round of four under par to overtake Hawaii Pacific for the second round lead at the Pacific West Conference Women's Golf Championships at the Aliante Golf Club.

With just 18 holes to play, the Eagles hold a 10-shot advantage. Biola, ranked No. 30 nationally and No. 9 in the NCAA West Region, is playing for the PacWest's automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.

Trailing by five shots after Monday's first round, the Eagles put together a round that vaulted them into the top spot. Rachel Shaw is the co-leader at -1, shooting 73 today, but it was also her teammates that helped make the improbable run. BU's Karis Haltom had the low round of the day with a 4-under 68, and Claire Shubin fired a 69. Melanie Reyes turned in a 74 to complete the Eagle scoring.

Hawaii Pacific (+17) is in second place, seven shots ahead of Academy of Art (+24). Dominican is in fourth (+34), Jessup is fifth (+37), Westmont and Point Loma are tied for sixth (+39), Vanguard and Menlo is tied for eighth (+40), and Hawaii Hilo is tenth (+67).

While Biola is trying to pull away with the team title, the medalist battle is uber tight. Shaw is tied with Monday's leader Rori Fanning of Meno (-1). Two shots back in a three-way tie at +1 is Menlo's Holly Obermuller, Haltom, Lily Landt (Hawaii Pacific) and Hannah Camara (Westmont). Jessica Burdick (Jessup) is in seventh (+2), and three players are tied for ninth at +4 to round out the top 10+--Shubin, Ellesix Mingming (DUC) and Meritxell Illamola (ART U).

Biola will be shooting for their third title in their last four years when the women tee off on Wednesday at noon.
