Cougars Win, Golden Eagles Fall at NCAA's

Azusa Pacific advances at the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships with a 4-1 win over North Georgia. Concordia's title season closes with a 4-2 setback to Washburn.

ALAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.--Azusa Pacific men's tennis season continues another day at the NCAA National Championships while Concordia's successful year comes to a close with a loss today at Sanlando Park.

It took three hours and 15 minutes but Azusa Pacific outlasted the University of North Georgia, 4-1. The Cougars now advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals against No. 3 Texas-Tyler. Concordia lost a hard fought battle with Washburn, 4-2 to end its title winning season at 20-4.

AZUSA PACIFIC 4, NORTH GEORGIA 1
The Cougars moved into the NCAA Quarterfinals with a 4-1 win over North Georgia on Tuesday morning. APU, the No. 6 seed, will next take on No. 3 Texas-Tyler on Wednesday at noon PT.

Azusa Pacific began the victory over the No. 15 seeded Nighhawks by taking the doubles point. Elias Emilio Walter and Soeren Grandke began the play with a win on court one with a 6-3 win. After North Georgia won on court two, the Cougars clinched the point on court three with Miha Velicki and Joan Crespo's 6-3 win.

In singles play, the Nighthawks got a point back right away on court four. But the rest of the afternoon took a lot longer to determine. APU's Velicki won the next point for the Cougars after a three-set battle with Franco Rebora, 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 on court three. Crespo followed with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) triumph over Juan Cruz Blanco.

Grandke wrapped up the three hour and 15 minute match on court two with grind out win over Robin Eldin, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. 

The Cougars, now 24-4, will make their first trip to the quarterfinals since 2022. North Georgia's season ends at 14-8.

WASHBURN 4, CONCORDIA 2
Concordia opened their first-ever NCAA Round of 16 match with a doubles point win against Washburn. Max Mueller and Felix Veyhle won on court one (6-2) and Adam Large and Maz Renz won on court three (6-3).

But the No. 9 Ichabods responded with three straight wins on singles courts one, four and six to take a 3-1 lead. Large kept the Golden Eagles alive on court three with a 7-5, 6-0 win to make it 3-2. 

The score remained at 3-2 for another 30 minutes before Washburn finally won out at No. 2 when Vaclav Schneider defeated Veyhle, 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 in a marathon match.

The No. 13 seeded Golden Eagles, winners of their first ever Pacific West Conference title and first NCAA tournament win, ends their successful season at 20-4. The Ichabods advance to the quarterfinals at 21-3.
