Cougars Edged by Patriots, 4-3

The men's tennis season for Azusa Pacific comes to a close with a narrow loss to UT-Tyler. The Cougars close 2025 at 24-5.

ALAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla.—University of Texas-Tyler won the final two matches of the day to slip past Azusa Pacific 4-3 on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA men’s tennis tournament at Sanlando Park..

Azusa Pacific’s season closes at 24-5 with the tight loss, while UT-Tyler moves into Thursday’s semifinals at 24-2.

The Patriots won the doubles point by winning on court three, and then clinched with a dramatic victory on court one. There, Danile Felker and Carel Wessel edged Elias Emilio Walter and Soeren Grandke, 7-6 (7-3). On court two, APU’s Joan Crespo and Miha Velicki were up 5-2 when the doubles point was clinched.

In singles, UT-Tyler pushed their lead to 2-0 on court six, but the Cougars answered with three straight singles wins. Walter beat Artiom Darofeev on court one, 6-1, 6-4, Grandke topped No. 7 nationally ranked Wessel 6-3, 6-3 and Velicki gave APU a 3-2 lead with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win over Martin Despodov.

But the Patriots came back with three-set wins on courts four and six to complete the comeback.

This was the Cougars tenth straight NCAA appearance and third overall quarterfinal berth.
