It’s just one sleep until the final regular season games, with much still to be determined regarding the 2026 Pacific West Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Championship fields..
For the men, there is an unprecedented log jam in spots four through nine, with six teams battling for the remaining three spots. On the women's side, we have our six, but seeds 2-4 still need to be sorted out.
The top six teams after the conference schedule is completed on Saturday will qualify to make the trip to San Diego and Golden Gymnasium for the PacWest tournaments, March 5-7. The winner of the single elimination event earns the PacWest's automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.
For the men,
Point Loma (17-4) was the only team to clinch a berth in the tournament until Thursday night. The Sea Lions won the regular season championship and the No. 1 seed that goes with it. Finally, in thir 21st games of the season,
Westmont (14-7) and
Hawaii Pacific (13-8) clinched a tournament spot last night.
The only seed that is solidified is Point Loma's. But more importantly, those final three tournament spots are still completely up for grabs heading into Saturday's games.
In addition to the three squads that have San Diego tickets, here is the group battling for the next three slots..
Dominican (12-9), Vanguard (12-9), Fresno Pacific (12-9), Jessup (11-10),
Concordia (11-10), and
Chaminade (11-10).
Two of those teams play each other on Saturday when
Fresno Pacific travels to
Dominican. The winner of that game is in.
Chaminade is at
Jessup. The loser is out, the winner has to wait and see how the other games play out. Trying to stay alive is
Vanguard (at Menlo) and
Concordia (hosting HPU). Even after all the games are in the books, multiple tiebreaker scenarios may need to be employed to determine the final three slots and the seedings.
On the women’s side, the story is completely different.
Vanguard (18-3) clinched the regular season title and the No. 1 seed on Thursday night.
Concordia (12-9) is locked in as the No. 6 seed and
Dominican (14-7) is the No. 5 seed.
Point Loma (16-5), Westmont (16-5) and
Azusa Pacific (16-5) are in a dead heat, tied for second place, with their Saturday results still needed to determine which of them is the 2, 3 and 4 seeds. The Sea Lions and Warriors actually play each other in San Diego, while APU will play rival Biola. Again tiebreakers will likely come into play to determine where two of the teams end up.
