Shark's Week Includes 5-0 Record

Hawaii Pacific wins five matches on the road, with Seth Newman leading the way with a 5-0 singles record.

Hawaii Pacific met the definition of Shark marathon week with five matches, all wins for the Sharks. HPU’s Seth Newman was a key cog the Shark’s machine, winning all five of his singles matches and going 4-1 in doubles.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Hawaii Pacific’s Seth Newman, Jr., 6-0, Bury St. Edmunds, England
Hawaii Pacific’s Seth Newman had a marathon week of games and excelled in almost all of them, going 5-0 in singles and 4-1 in doubles. The junior from England teamed with fellow Shark Yannick Heitzeberg in doubles on court 1 mostly (one match at No. 2 doubles) to win four, including a 7-6 (7-5) victory against Texas-Permian Basin. In singles on court four, Newman went 5-0 including a comeback win over Fresno Pacific’s Jordi Gonzalez, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. The first-year Shark has now won nine singles matches in a row (11-6) and is 8-4 in doubles.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Hawaii Pacific Sharks                                                                                 
Hawaii Pacific went an astounding 5-0 last week on the road that included matches played in Dallas, Azusa and Santa Barbara. They improved to 9-4 with the victories and have now won six matches in a row. The Sharks topped UT-Permian Basin and Western New Mexico by 4-0 scores, beat Menlo 7-0, Fresno Pacific 5-2 and Westmont 4-3. Three of the matches against the Sunbirds went three sets, while Adam Vasir might have played the longest match with a gritty 7-6 (16-14), 7-6 (7-2) win over FPU’s Cedric Kaufman. Vasir went 4-0 in singles on the long week.  

ITA NATIONAL RANKINGS: Biola’s duo of Angel Guerrero and Alejandro Flores Monteverde is ranked No. 1 in the ITA doubles list, sporting a 10-1 record. Azusa Pacific’s Soeren Grandke is listed at No. 15 in singles, and Biola’s team is ranked 25th. To see the lists, click here.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Biola went 3-0 last week with wins over Colorado Mesa, Western New Mexico and Fresno Pacific to improve to 11-1 on the season. Keyon Gahvarehchi went 3-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles for the Eagles…Azusa Pacific won their only two matches of the week, both 7-0 verdicts over Western New Mexico and Fresno Pacific…Menlo beat Division I Illinois State 4-3, the Oaks first-ever win over a D-I school…Point Loma went 2-0 with non-conference victories over Stanton and Colgate.

THIS WEEK: Azusa Pacific will continue a hosting role with Colorado Mesa and Menlo playing on their courts, while the Cougars host Hawaii Pacific in a big showdown today. Hawaii Hilo begins a road trip through Texas, while APU will step outside of conference play to host Tufts on Thursday, and Point Loma does the same in welcoming Northern Arizona.
