Cougars Capture Men's Tennis Awards

Azusa Pacific sweeps Hawaii Hilo and Hope International, with Soeren Grandke showing a 4-0 effort in singles and doubles.

Azusa Pacific picked up two wins, including an important showdown with Hawaii Hilo. The Cougars No. 1 Soeren Grandke had four wins on the week, including an impressive victory over Hilo’s Jamie Paquet in a battle of two of the top players in the conference.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Azusa Pacific’s Soeren Grandke, Jr., 6-7, Dreieich, Germany                                                            
Azusa Pacific’s Soeren Grandke went 4-0 last week during a pair of Azusa Pacific victories over Hawaii Hilo and Hope International. All four wins came on court one, including a grinder over Hilo’s Jaime Pacquet, who was 5-0 coming into the match. Grandke won out 6-4, 7-5. He also teamed with Mathys Piniot for doubles wins in both matches. Against Hope, the third-year Cougar, a two-time All-PacWest selection, topped Karan Srivastava in straight sets.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Azusa Pacific Cougars                                                                                                                             
Azusa Pacific improved to 9-4 with a pair of 7-0 wins over Hope International and Hawaii Hilo. The Cougars, now winners of five straight, swept a good Vulcan team with straight sets singles victories on all but one court, and they took care of two of the three doubles matches. It was more of the same against Hope (NAIA) with five of six singles matches going two sets and APU swept the doubles portion.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Hawaii Hilo went 2-1 on their California trip, defeating Westmont (4-2) and Menlo (6-1)…Biola split matches, which included dropping their first match of the year to D3 power Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 4-3…Hawaii Pacific went 2-1 on a tough Texas trip, defeating UT Dallas (4-0) and Southwest Baptist (4-2), and losing to Ouuchita Baptisrt (4-3).

THIS WEEK: Action continues today when Hawaii Pacific wraps up a Texas trip at UT-Permian Basin. On Tuesday, Fresno Pacific is at Biola. Wednesday features Western New Mexico at Azusa Pacific, and Thursday shows FPU at APU and Hawaii Pacific playing Western New Mexico at Azusa. Friday—HPU vs. FPU, WNM at Biola, Stanton at Point Loma and Illinois State at Menlo. Saturday shows HPU at Westmont and on Sunday Jessup hosts California Lutheran and Colorado Mesa is at Westmont.
