Sunbirds Win Four, Ueoku Keeps Unbeaten Streak Alive

Fresno Pacific took our four PacWest opponents, led by their No. 1 Yume Ueoku who just keeps winning.

Fresno Pacific keeps rolling, this time taking out four PacWest teams to improve to 9-4 on the season. The Sunbirds' No. 1 player Yume Ueoku won four doubles matches and four singles bouts to remain undefeated on the season on court one.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Fresno Pacific's Yume Ueoku, Jr., 5-1, Fukuoka, Japan                                    
Fresno Pacific's Yume Ueoku continued her strong spring run with four more singles and four more doubles wins as the Sunbirds went 4-0 on the week. The junior from Japan improved to 13-0 this spring with wins against CSU Los Angeles, Menlo, Westmont and Biola. Ueoku won in straight sets in all four matches, but had to battle to outlast Menlo's Zofia Dziewiecka, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3). In doubles, she teamed with Fabiana Lucia Gonzalez for four more wins, with the closest coming against Biola's No. 1 duo, 7-5. Ueoku, who last suffered defeat in the Fall in a pair of three-setters to a player from Division I Fresno State and another from Colorado Mesa, is now 15-2 on the season in doubles and 15-2 in doubles.

Fresno Pacific improved to 9-4 overall and to 8-3 against PacWest teams with four victories last week. The Sunbirds took out Biola (5-2), Westmont (4-0), CSU Los Angeles (7-0) and Menlo (5-2). It was FPU's second win over nationally ranked (#32) Menlo this season, and they avenged a 6-1 loss to Biola just a few weeks ago. In addition to Yume Ueoku's unbeaten play, No. 2 Fabriana Lucia Gonzalez did not lose, including her role at Ueoku's doubles partner. The Sunbirds have now won five in a row, with their last loss coming to Azusa Pacific on March 12.

ITA NATIONAL RANKINGS: Hawaii Pacific is the highest ranked team from the PacWest at No. 22. Menlo is 32, Azusa Pacific 36, Fresno Pacific 41, Point Loma 45 and Stanislaus State 48. The doubles duo of Hawaii Pacific’s Evi Roobol and Annika Harkovirta is No. 14, with APU's Stina Larsson and Karola Suviste at No. 22. Fresno Pacific’s Yume Ueoku and Lucia Gonzalez Gimenez listed 31st.  Point Loma’s Alina Kupfer is No. 32 in singles, Larsson is No. 36 and Roobol is 46th... Click here for the complete list.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Azusa Pacific snapped Point Loma's 10-match winning streak with a narrow 4-3 win in San Diego on Saturday. The Sea Lions won the doubles point, but the Cougars scrambled back with wins on the top three singles courts. APU eventually clinched on court six with Mariana Reveles Arreola's 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win...The first official PacWest tennis seedings came out last Wednesday, with two more listings remaining. The seedings take into account head-to-head match-ups, matches against other teams in the conference and the ITA national algorhythm rankings. Last week, those rankings looked like this last week, with records listed from that time. 1. Hawaii Pacific (9-1), 2. Azusa Pacific (8-1), 3. Point Loma (5-1), 4. Fresno Pacific (7-3), 5. THIS WEEK: Play heats up this week as the countdown to the PacWest Championships is now just a little over two weeks away (Surprise, AZ, April 15-17).
