Sharks, Sea Lions Sweep Their Way to Awards

Point Loma wins 12th straight while HPU wins four against regionally ranked Jessup. CUI Kaiser pitches nine scoreless innings and MC's Hogan hits .687.

Point Loma and Hawaii Pacific had 4-0 sweeps to share Team of the Week honors, while Concordia’s Matthew Kaiser was nearly unhittable to earn PacWest and D2CIDA West Region Pitcher of the Week. Menlo’s Oliver Hogan hit .687 and scored eight times to claim Player of the Week.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Menlo’s Oliver Hogan, INF, Jr., 6-2, R/R, Seattle, Wash.                                
Menlo’s Oliver Hogan hit the ball at a torrid clip last week, going 11-for-16 for a sizzling average of .687. Hogan had multiple hits in all four games of the series against Concordia including the first day went he went 7-for-8 in the doubleheader. He totaled eight runs scored, hit four doubles, had a home run, a stolen base and knocked home three runs. The designated hitter is now hitting .413 on the season and has scored 18 times in 13 games.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Concordia’s Matthew Kaiser, RHP, Jr., 6-1, 195, Los Alamitos, Calif.        
Concordia’s Matthew Kaiser threw a seven-inning complete game shutout and added two scoreless innings of relief as well during a stellar week. The junior righthander gave up just two hits and no earned runs during a 7-1 win over Jessup, walking four and fanning four. The following day, he tossed two innings in relief during a 8-1 Golden Eagles win, striking out five Oak batters and allowing just one hit. He totaled nine K’s in nine innings and just three hits, and also earned D2CIDA West Region Pitcher of the Week.

TEAMS OF THE WEEK: The PacWest Teams of the Week are the Point Loma Sea Lions and the Hawaii Pacific Sharks. The Sea Lions ran off four more straight wins, this time sweeping a series with Vanguard, outscoring the Lions 43-10. Point Loma has now won 12 games in a row, all conference contests, to move to 12-0 in PacWest play and 16-3 overall. Hawaii Pacific also won four to sweep regionally ranked Jessup in a series in Hawaii. The Sharks are now an even 6-6 in PacWest play and 8-9 overall.

NCBWA WEST REGION POLL: The west coast baseball writer's first poll of March has four PacWest teams in the top eight.  1. RV—CSU Los Angeles 10-7, Biola 11-9, Stanislaus State 9-8, Montana State Billings 9-10. 

THIS WEEK IN THE PACWEST: It’s all PacWest play this week, featuring series starting on Wednesday with Biola at Hawaii Hilo. Azusa Pacific will be at Hawaii Pacific, Fresno Pacific is at Westmont, Jessup travels to Chaminade and Point Loma is at Menlo.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Point Loma’s Josiah Rodriguez hit .571 last week (8-14) with a home run and six RBI in the Vanguard series…Westmont’s Grant Yzermans hit three home runs and drove in seven during Westmont’s four-game split with Biola…Blake Helsper hit .461 for Hawaii Pacific and drove in five runs in their sweep of Jessup…Derek Silva was outstanding again for Point Loma with six innings of scoreless work and 10 strikeouts…Teammate Vaughn Neckar gave up one run in five innings and fanned seven…Westmont’s Joey Rico allowed just three hits and one run in 6.2 innings, didn’t walk and batter and struck out seven in a win over Biola…Luke Ballantyne was threw a complete game in that same series, leading Biola to a win in seven innings. Ballantyne gave up four hits and two runs.
