SURPRiSE, ARIZ.—Hawaii Pacific and
Point Loma won their Wednesday opening round matches to move into Thursday’s semifinals at the Pacific West Conference Championships at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Center.
#3 HAWAI`I PACIFIC 4, FRESNO PACIFIC 2
The Sharks won the doubles point and took straight set matches on courts one, five and six to claim a Pacific West Conference quarterfinals win over Fresno Pacific, 4-2.
HPU, the number three seed, advances to the semifinals to face #2 seed Biola on Thursday at 9 am.
HPU took the first point by winning two doubles contests by 6-2, 6-3 scores to take the early lead. The Sunbirds earned two points with wins on courts two (
Emilio Seelbach) and court four (
Jordi Gonzalez), but the Sharks captured straight set wins from
Adam Vasir, Arthur Pery and
Rene Gabriel Jung to clinch the match.
The Sharks improved to 13-4 on the season, while the Sunbirds fall to 5-7.
#4 Point Loma 4, #5 Hawaii Hilo 2
In a match that took nearly three and a half hours to complete, #4 seed Point Loma held on for a 4-2 win over #5 Hawaii Hilo.
The match was clinched at 3:22 when PLNU’s
Marcos Alogo-Piqueras edged
Matthieu Wehner, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-2. That bout was one of two matches remaining, as the other war went unfinished between Point Loma’s
Finn Kirschner and UHH’s
Angel Garcia Fonseca, 7-5, 3-6, 5-2, UNF.
Earlier, the Sea Lions won the doubles point, and then
Noel Stanislas won in straight sets on court one.
Paul Sobich won for Point Loma on court five with UHH taking matches on court two
(Max Solano) and court six
(Filippo Di Perna).
Those matches were done well before the marathon games on courts three and four.
Point Loma (8-10) advances to play #1 seed APU. Hilo (5-9) will take on Fresno Pacific in the Fifth Place match on Thursday (9 am).
