Biola Wins First Women's Track and Field Title

The Eagles unseat 9-time defending champion Azusa Pacific with 195 team points.

SAN DIEGO—There is a new champion in Pacific West Conference women’s track and field.

Biola won their first-ever women’s title, ending a run of nine straight championships by their rival Azusa Pacific. The Eagles tallied 195 team points to APU’s 160, with Fresno Pacific landing in third with 152.

Hannah Richarson of Azusa Pacific was named the women’s Field Athlete of the Meet, also for the second straight year, winning the hammer, shot put and placing fourth in the discus. Fresno Pacific’s Cyan Haslip was voted in as the women’s Track Athlete of the Meet, placing second in the 100, 200 and 100 hurdles. She also ran on FPU’s champion 4 x 100 relay team for a total of 26.50 points.

It  was a big day for Biola, winning the PacWest trophy for the first time, ending rival Azusa Pacific’s amazing string of nine straight titles and also clinching the BU-APU Cornerstone Cup for the first time with the win.

Everything athlete Eboselulu Omofoma compiled 34 points for the Eagles, winning the 100 hurdles, the 400 hurdles, finishing second in the triple jump and third in the long jump.  Bethany Mapes was a double-winner in the 1,500 and the 5,000 meters.

Here are the  Saturday winners in the women’s competition
*Fresno Pacific in the 4 x 100 relay by a wide margin in 45.01.

Bethany Mapes of Biola (4:32.65) pulled away down the stretch to defeat Point Loma’s Maddie Reeves (4:33.62 and teammate Hailey Wurzbach (4:34.20).

*Eboselulu Omofoma of Biola won the 100 hurdles in 13.74, a NCAA provisional qualifier. Second place crosser Cyan Haslip of Fresno Pacific also hit the provisional at 14.02.

*Kenahdi Haslip (FPU) won the 400 meters in 54.30, with teammate Shaniya Randolph next at 54.43. Both met the NCAA qualifying standard as did third place Lanicia Ellis of Dominican (55.29).

*FPU took four of the top five spots in the 100 meters, led by winner Mikiyla Royal’s time of 11.60.

*Azusa Pacific’s Emma Hein won the two-day, seven-event heptathlon with 5,035 points. Fresno Pacific’s Clara Wagner, won the final event (800 meters) and moved into second place (4,836) with Point Loma’s Rowan Cebulski in third (4,818). All three are provisional NCAA qualifiers.  

*Elizabeth Kurz of Biola won the 800 meters by over two seconds in 2:12.53.

* Kaylee Best (Vanguard) became a double winner in the jumps, winning the triple in 40-9 (12.42). Eboselulu Omofomo (Biola) added to her point total with a second place leap of 40-0 1/2.

*APU’s Hannah Richardson won her third straight shot put title with a toss of 49-10. Richardson also won the hammer on Thursday.

*Shaniya Randolph followed up her second place run in the 400 with a blue ribbon in the 200 in 23.83. That is a qualifier, as is Cyan Haslip’s (23.84) and Mikiyla Royals’ (FPU) 23.88.

*Biola crossed the five kilometer finish line with four of the top five runners, led by Bethany Mapes in 17:19. Hailey Wurzbach followed (17:20) with Maddie Reeves of Point Loma
8in third (17:24).
