The
Colorado Mesa men’s and women’s tennis programs, who competed as NCAA Division II independents this past year, will return to the
Pacific West Conference for the 2026-27 season.
The Mavericks will be a PacWest affiliate for tennis, and they will continue to compete in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) in all other sports. CMU joins
Fresno Pacific, Menlo, CSU Los Angeles, and
Stanislaus State as affiliate members. The Mavericks were previously a member of the PacWest for tennis from 2020-25.
“We are pleased to welcome Colorado Mesa back to the PacWest Conference as an affiliate member in men's and women's tennis,” said PacWest Commissioner
Brad Jones. “Colorado Mesa has been a valued affiliate member in the past, and we are excited to renew that relationship. This is a great fit for both Colorado Mesa and the PacWest, and we look forward to their return to conference competition.”
The PacWest will now have eight men’s teams and 13 women’s teams. For the first time, the PacWest will play a conference schedule in 2027, a single round robin slate that will feature each team playing each other at least once.
“Rejoining the PacWest is the right move for our tennis programs,” said CMU Athletic Director
Rob Courtney. “It gives our student-athletes a competitive home, a path to the NCAA Tournament, and the recognition they've earned. We're grateful to Commissioner Jones and the conference for welcoming us back.”
At the end of the conference schedule (April 17), the top eight women’s teams and the top six men’s squads will qualify for the Pacific West Conference Championships, to be held April 22-24 in Surprise, Arizona. Those teams will battle to play for the PacWest’s automatic bid into NCAA postseason play.
“I am super excited to be back in the Pac-West Conference, it gives us a home to compete for regular season championships, qualify for the Pac West Tournament, be part of the NCAA West Region and gives our players the chance to compete for weekly awards, year-end awards as well as academic awards,” veteran Maverick Head Coach
Dan MacDonald said.
