Eagles Edge Golden Eagles, Vulcans Fall to Cougars

Biola wins a wild one over PacWest rival Concordia and will play Western Washington on Friday. The Vulcans and Golden Eagles face elimination games tomorrow.

There is nothing new under the sun when it comes to softball games between Concordia and Biola.

Only the site, final score and who wins fluctuates. Playing each other for the fourth time in the last two weeks and sixth time this season, Biola squeeked out a 5-4 win over the Golden Eagles in the first game for both teams at the NCAA West Regional in Hayward.

Biola will now play Western Washington, who upset No. 1 seed CSU East Bay. Concordia will take on the Pioneers in an elimination game. Hawai`i Hilo, playing at the other regional in San Diego, fell to host CSU San Marcos and will take on CSU Dominguez Hills on Friday.

BIOLA 5, CONCORDIA 4
Ariana Banos hit a double off the centerfield fence and later scored on Kennadie Tsue’s sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning to lead Biola to a 5-4 win over PacWest rival Concordia at Pioneer Field.

DJ Symons then put the heart of the Golden Eagles line-up down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win. Prior to that, there was a whole lot of back and forth action between the top two teams in the PacWest.

Lillianna Garcia hit a two-run homer for the Eagles in the top of the first and Alexa Sheard had an RBI single in the second to get BU a 3-0 lead.

But CUI’s Kaliya Yco hit a two-run shot in the fourth to make it 3-2, and the Golden Eagles pieced together a big inning in the sixth that included RBI hits by Jessica Im and Serena Velez to give CUI the lead at 4-3. On Im’s RBI single, a potential insurance run was cut down at home plate to send the Eagles to the top of the seventh and their last chance.

With one out Mikayla Huskey singled and Banos followed with her shot over the centerfielder’s head to score Huskey. A wild pitch sent Banos scampering to third base, and Tsue’s fly ball to left was just deep enough to allow Banos to slide past the catcher’s tag for would be the winning run.

Sheard and Huskey each had three hits for Biola, while Im, Caitlynn Campbell, Audrey Robles and Yco had two hits each for the Golden Eagles.

Symons got the win for Biola with two innings of scoreless relief. She allowed just two hits, didn’t walk a batter and fanned two.

CSU SAN MARCOS 9, HAWAI`I HILO 1
#3 nationally ranked and No. 1 seed CSU San Marcos looked every bit the part in running to a 9-1 win over #8 seed Hawai`i Hilo on Thursday afternoon in San Marcos.

The Cougars walked it off in the bottom of the sixth via the mercy rule.

CSUSM moved out to a 6-0 lead through the first two innings of play. In the fourth, they added two more runs to make it 8-0, but the Vulcans got on the board in the top of the fifth to keep the game alive.

In that inning, Mariah Antoque and Ava Monturio singled and Antoque eventually came home on Chenoa Cainglut’s ground ball.

The Cougars put the clinching run on the board in the sixth, via a walk and an error.

The Vulcans will try to keep their season alive on Friday at 12:30 pm, where they will play CSU Dominguez Hills, who lost in the afternoon game to CSU Monterey Bay game. If Hilo wins that game, they would turn around and play again at 3 pm.
