Powered by a strong performance at the NCAA Championships, Point Loma's
Annika Yturralde has been selected by the Pacific West Conference coaches at the PacWest Women's Golfer of the Year.
Her coach
Lance Hancock is the Coach of the Year and Menlo rookie
Kim Penzold has been chosen as Freshman of the Year. The annual vote is taken after the conclusion of the entire season.
Annika Yturralde qualified for the NCAA National Championships after finishing third at the NCAA West Regional. The junior finished third among 98 players, earning an individual qualifying spot to the as one of the top-two individuals on a non-qualifying team. She had a +12 scorecard for the three days in cold Colorado conditions.
The local product (La Mesa) and a transfer from Creighton, Yturralde would go on to finish 31st at the national championships, which included a final round of 73. Both finishes, regional and national, were the best for a Point Loma golfer in school history.
Menlo's
Kim Penzold was chosen as the Freshman of the Year. The German native ranked 2nd among PacWest golfers nationally (No. 100 overall) on Clippd, and she won two tournaments during the year (RCA Electric Spring Invite and The Big Freeze). She had seven top-10 finishes including second place at PacWest Championship at +2, which also made her the top freshmen.
Penzold had a 75.3 scoring average, and would have qualified for NCAA Regional if Menlo was postseason eligible. Her season-best two-round tournament score was 1-over-par 143 at The Big Freeze, season-best three-round tournament score was 2-over-par 218 the PacWest Championship. It is the second year in a row that Menlo has had the Freshman of the Year.
Lance Hancock, in his ninth season at Point Loma, led the Sea Lions during a very good regular and postseason campaign. PLNU won the LA Spring Kick-off and the Dominican Big Freeze, and finished second at the Bulldog Desert Classic, the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout and the Pacific West Conference Championships. At the PacWest, they had to rally back from a tough first day to climb from fourth on the leaderboard to second after the final round. They began the tournament 16 shots back and finished just two shots behind champion Hawai`i Hilo.
Hancock and the Sea Lions would go on to place ninth at the NCAA West Regional tournament and Yturralde was 31st at the NCAA National Championships.
The All-PacWest First Team features Yturralde and Penzold, along with Sea Lions
Isabella Gunasayan, Allie Nguyen and
Summer Schafer. Three of those five are freshmen and all five are on the All-PacWest team for the first time.
Vanguard's Theresa Shaw is on the Second Team, her third time making an All-PacWest squad (the other two times were at Biola). It is also the third time for
Hawai`i Pacific's Shuiyuen He.
The All-PacWest teams are based off of the year-end Clippd.com rankings, which take into account the metrics for the entire season.
