Point Loma and Summer Schafer Nab First WG Awards

The Sea Lions finished third at the first tournament of the year in Arizona, led by Schafer's second place finish. Westmont grabs second at a tournament in Wyoming.

Five PacWest teams hit the links in Arizona and Wyoming this week to tee off the 2026-27 season. Point Loma led the way with a third place finish among 16 teams in Goodyear, while Westmont tied for second among 12 squads in Sheridan.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Point Loma’s Summer Schafer, Soph., 5-5, San Diego                                         
Point Loma’s Summer Schafer shot a 3-under par 69 to move from sixth place up to second in the final round of the RJGA Shootout at Estrella on Tuesday (Sept. 15) in Goodyear, Arizona. She had an eagle on the first hole of the day and closed the front nine with back-to-back birdies to jump start her move up the leaderboard. The local San Diego product shot an even par 72 on the first day to finish at -3 for the tournament, four shots back of the winner Ellaclair Leedom of CSU San Marcos.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Point Loma Sea Lions                                                                                                   
Point Loma finished third in a talented field of west coast teams at the RJGA Shootout at Estrella (Golf Club of Estrella) on Monday-Tuesday in Goodyear, Arizona. The Sea Lions finished at +11 over 36 holes, behind CSU San Marcos (-3), a 2026 NCAA semifinalist and CSU Los Angeles (+1). Summer Schafer (see above) led the way with a -3 tally with 2026 PacWest Player of the Year Annika Yturralde next at +2. It was the debut event for new PLNU coach Miranda Greene.

PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: In Goodyear, Vanguard was an impressive fifth place finisher of 16 teams in the all Division II field. The Lions turned in a +20 scorecard, led by Theresa Shaw’s fifth place finish with an even-par effort. VU’s Karis Haltom was 14th at +3. Haltom was the 2025 PacWest champion while at Biola and was third last year as a Westmont team member. Shaw was the defending RJGA champion…Dominican was sixth, led by Faith Guevera (+4)…Jessup tied for 12th, with Julianne Canda (+11) turning in the top Warrior score…Westmont tied for second at the Travis Roy Invitational in Wyoming, hosted by South Dakota Mines. The Warriors finished at +61, just two shots behind the winner Colorado State-Pueblo (+59) over the three rounds. Cooper Gilmore finished in second place with rounds of 72, 71 and 78 (+5). Ashley Chang tied for sixth at +13.

LOOKING AHEAD: Four PacWest teams will play at the Wasatch Invitational this coming Sunday and Monday (Sept. 20-21), hosted by Westminster in South Jordan, Utah. Point Loma, Westmont, Jessup and Vanguard will play in the two-day event at the Glenmoor GC. Hawaii Hilo will head to the Pacific Northwest to play in St. Martin’s tournament at The Home Course in Dupont, Washington.
