Biola gains a sweep of the PacWest weekly awards after sweeps of Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific. Eagle Briley Phelps had a hat trick and assist for Player of the Week honors and Taylor Bradshaw led a tight defense that provided two shutouts.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Biola Eagles                                                                                                        
Biola is the Team of the Week after posting a pair of shutouts to jump out to an early PacWest lead with a 2-0 record. The Eagles edged Chaminade 1-0 and they put away Hawaii Pacific, 6-0. Briley Phelps (see below) had a foot in four of the seven goals scored on the week, including a hat trick against the Sharks. Jade Alverio had two scores against HPU and Gissel Fang scored the long goal against the Silverswords with Phelps on the assist. Goalkeeper Laura Brennan totaled six saves in two halves on defense. The Eagles are now 5-3-1 overall.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Biola’s Briley Phelps, MF, Sr., 5-5, Santa Clarita, Calif.                              
Biola’s Briley Phelps scored three times against Hawaii Pacific and added the game-winning assist against Chaminade to earn her second PacWest Player of the Week award this season. Against the Sharks in 76 minutes of play, the senior midfielder fired off 11 shots, six of them on goal to get to her three scores for her first career hat trick. The fourth-year Biola standout, a two-time All-PacWest selection, now has seven goals, six assist and 20 points, all leading totals in the conference stat column. This is her third all-time Player of the Week award.

DEFENDER OF THE WEEK: Biola’s Taylor Bradshaw, MF, Soph., 5-5, Bakersfield, Calif.                
Biola’s Taylor Bradshaw helped lead the back side of the field to a pair of shutouts last week against Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade. The Eagle defense allowed just four shots on goal against the Silverswords and five versus the Sharks to record their third and fourth shutouts of the season. “Taylor has taken on the role as our foundational pillar on the backline, and has thrived in that position,” said BU coach Brett Croft. “Due to her natural ability to lead, calmness and composure on the ball, and combined with her toughness and grit defensively she has thrived. We are extremely thankful to have Taylor a part of our program here at Biola.”
 
PACWEST NEWS AND NOTES: Dominican  went 1-0 last week with a 2-0 win over Westmont…Point Loma went 1-0-1 with a win over Chaminade and a tie with HPU…Concordia and Hawaii Hilo tied 0-0 in a battle of perennial title contenders. CUI goalkeeper Christian Sidoti had three saves and Hilo’s Lydia Keller had four stops…The Vulcans also topped Vanguard 3-2…Vanguard beat Westmont 3-2…Westmont’s Ellie Ludwig had nine saves against Vanguard and eight versus Dominican…HPU’s Natalie Navarro also had nine saves in their tie with Point Loma…Chaminade’s Sydney Bakritzes had nine saves as well against the Sea Lions…Today’s (Sept. 29) United Soccer Coaches Association West Region poll looks like this  (1) Cal Poly Pomona (5-0-4), (2) Western Washington (5-1-3), (3) Simon Fraser (5-2-1), (4) Concordia (3-1-4), (5) Point Loma (4-2-4), (6) CSU Los Angeles (4-2-3), (7) UC Merced (5-0-3), (8) Stanislaus State (4-2-2), (9) Seattle Pacific (5-3-0), (10) CSU San Marcos (3-1-5). Nationally, Cal Poly Pomona is ranked second, CSU Los Angeles is 14^th and Seattle Pacific checks in at No. 23.

LOOKING AHEAD: Just seven matches are on the PacWest schedule this week, but there are some big games to circle on your calendar for sure. Today (Tuesday), Chaminade visits Concordia. On Thursday, the Silverswords visit Vanguard, Hawaii Hilo is at Biola and Hawaii Pacific goes to Concordia.
