Azusa Pacific Falls In West Regional Final

AZUSA, Calif. -- Cal Poly Pomona has the PacWest's number in men's soccer. The Broncos defeated Azusa Pacific 1-0 on a goal by Gabriel Castillo in the NCAA West Regional final to defend their title in front of a capacity crowd on Thursday night at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

Each of the last four PacWest teams to advance to the NCAA West Regional has been eliminated by Cal Poly Pomona, which hasn't allowed a single goal in any of those four games. Azusa Pacific is the most recent PacWest team to fall against the Broncos in a hard-fought battle, snapping Azusa Pacific's 14-match winning streak.

Azusa Pacific (17-2-1) created more scoring opportunities with 16 shots, including five on goal. The Broncos only created two shots on goal, but that was all they needed. The first shot on goal came in the first half on a bicycle kick by Eduard Lucas that was saved by Brendan Fix. The Broncos' next shot on goal didn't come until the 85th minute. Shortly after a shot hit off the sidebar, the Broncos offense was pushing again and Eduardo Faria flicked the ball to Castillo in the corner of the 18-yard box. Castillo fired and found the inside of the far post for the game-winner.

Bruno Pagani had two shots on goal for the Cougars and James Ndubueze placed one of his six shots on frame to lead the Cougars' attack. Jakob Hanson recorded five saves for the Broncos to preserve the shutout to win back-to-back NCAA West Region titles.
