Dominican & Stanislaus State Complete Upsets In Day One Of PacWest Tournament

SURPRIZE, Ariz. -- The quarterfinals are set for the 2018 PacWest Women's Tennis Tournament at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Center after four teams secured their berth into the final eight. No. 5 Sonoma State and No. 7 Concordia advanced with comfortable wins, while No. 9 Stanislaus State and No. 11 Dominican both pulled off 5-4 upsets to advance to the next round.

Sonoma State will go on to play No. 4 Point Loma at 9 a.m. on Thursday, while Dominican faces No. 3 Azusa Pacific, Concordia plays No. 2 Academy of Art and Stanislaus State takes on No. 1 Hawai`i Pacific. The matches in the consolation bracket will be played Thursday at 5:30 p.m. when Holy Names and Hawai`i Hilo play each other, while the other match features Cal State LA and Dixie State.

No. 5 SONOMA STATE 5, No. 12 HOLY NAMES 0 | BOX SCORE

Sonoma State made quick work of No. 12 Holy Names, winning 5-0 in just over two hours to return to the PacWest quarterfinals. After sweeping doubles, the nation's No. 3 singles player Warren Jensyn won easily 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to put the Seawolves within a point of victory. Jenna DeTurk got the clinching win at No. 5 singles, winning 6-2, 6-0 to complete the match. Sonoma State had won the first set in each of the four remaining unfinished matches.

Warren played with Carolyn Brooner at No. 1 doubles for just the third time this year and the duo won the match 8-3. DeTurn partnered with Amanda Zuidena at No. 2 doubles, and the pairing got the Seawolves on the board with an 8-2 win. Katherine Long and Hannah Highsmith completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win at the No. 3 position.

No. 11 DOMINICAN 5, No. 6 CAL STATE LA 4 | BOX SCORE

Dominican became the first No. 11 seed in tournament history to advance to the quarterfinals, recording a come-from-behind upset of the Golden Eagles on Wednesday morning. Katelyn Nguyen saved two match points in the final set and came back for a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(5) victory at No. 4 singles over Mariko Sagara. All other matches had ended and the score was tied 4-4 when the No. 4 singles match was barely beginning its deciding set. Nguyen led 4-2, but gave the break lead back and eventually faced two match points at 6-5 on Sagara's serve. With a tense tiebreaker tied 5-5, Nguyen secured the final two points of the match to pull off the upset.

Isabella Lopez gave Cal State LA a chance to beat the Penguins by coming back from down a set to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-0 in a must-win match for the Golden Eagles, tying the match 4-4. Skyler Schaar won a battle of nationally-ranked players for Dominican, beating No. 74 Amanda Schneider 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. Rickimae Torres got the No. 1 singles win, 6-1, 6-2 for the Penguins to earn the squad's first lead of the match. The Penguins' first singles win was by Savannah Gray at No. 6 singles to get the comeback started. She won 6-4, 6-0 for the first of four singles wins by Dominican. Chelsea Ruiz won at No. 5 singles for Cal State LA, 7-5, 6-1.

In doubles, Cal State LA won at the top-two positions easily, taking both 8-2. At No. 3 doubles, Dominican avoided the sweep with an 8-2 win. Nguyen partnered with Alex Wartenburg to earn the Penguins' lone doubles point as the duo improved to 10-2 in doubles this year.

No. 7 CONCORDIA 5, No. 10 DIXIE STATE 1 | BOX SCORE

Concordia earned a first-round win in a match that was tighter than the final score indicated, beating No. 10 Dixie State 5-1. Concordia won the first three singles matches that were completed to deny Dixie State the chance to come back as the Trailblazers led by a set in all three unfinished matches.

Concordia won two of the three doubles matches and then stretched the lead to 3-1 when Anastasia Kurpina won the No. 1 singles match by retirement. Samantha Schuster had partnered with Kuprina for a key win at No. 1 doubles and then earned a big win at No. 4 singles, winning 6-2, 6-0 to clinch the match. Johannah Keeline cruised to her win at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-0 to imrpove to 11-9 this season at No. 3 singles. Dixie State's Yolena Carlon led the No. 10 singles player in the nation 6-4, 3-1 when the match was called.

In doubles, Ghazal Pakbaten and Keeline won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles for Concordia's first point of the day. That tied the match after Hina and Kana Goldsmith had won at No. 3 doubles for Dixie State, 8-3. That was the first point of the match, but Dixie State was unable to add another as Concordia booked its spot in the semifinals.

No. 9 STANISLAUS STATE 5, No. 8 HAWAI`I HILO 4 | BOX SCORE

Two very tight matches went in favor of Stanislaus State, who pulled off the 5-4 win against Hawai`i Hilo. After both teams had won a doubles match, No. 2 doubles would determine who had the advantage going into singles play. Megan Hagerty and Taylor Galya took that match in a tiebreaker, 8-7(3) for Stanislaus State to take a 2-1 lead.

Hawai`i Hilo won three of the first four singles matches, but No. 46 Cassidy Ferrell won at No. 1 singles 7-5, 6-3 to even the match at 4-4. The No. 6 singles match was the deciding match with every other match finished, and again Galya got to be the hero. In the third set, she pushed through for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory to send the Warriors to the quarterfinals. Ebone Qualls got Stanislaus State's other singles victory, winning at No. 5 singles 7-6, 6-0.

The Vulcans won three of their singles matches in straight sets with Daniela SanzSara Marin and Marina Colvee Debrot each winning at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles, respectively. Marin parterned with Irena Le for the Vulcans lone win in doubles at the No. 3 position, 8-3. At No. 1 doubles, Ferrell played with Kayla Nguyen for an 8-5 triumph for Stanislaus State.
