IRVINE, Calif. – Azusa Pacific completed the first undefeated regular season in PacWest history and earned five awards as voted on by the conference’s head coaches, including a Player of the Year award for
Isaac Bawa, who is the second Cougar to win the honor.
Along with Bawa,
Dave Blomquist,
Orlando Lozano,
Brendan Fix and
Daniel Osei-tutu each earned awards as the Cougars won the PacWest title for the second year in a row. Point Loma’s
David Achaerandio also earned an award as the PacWest Newcomer of the Year, while also being named to the All-PacWest first team.
Azusa Pacific’s defense, led by Fix, Bawa, Osei-tutu and Lozano, allowed only 13 goals in the 2019 regular season, which is just over half of what they allowed last season en route to the PacWest title. Azusa Pacific recorded eight shutouts this season and had six goals by a one-goal margin. Fix was in the goal for two of those shutouts and had a 0.59 goals against average, which ranks fourth in PacWest history for a single season.
Bawa helped Azusa Pacific preserve its perfect record in the 2019 season in their toughest match, which came at home against Hawai`i Hilo. In the final minute of the first overtime period, Bawa scored with a header on a corner kick for the golden goal, which was his first goal of the season. He scored again in the following game and had an assist in the regular-season finale as the Cougars ended Dominican’s seven-match winning streak.
Blomquist is the PacWest Coach of the Year for the third time. His peers gave him the award after he led Azusa Pacific to an 18-0-0 record to successfully defend the conference title. The Cougars finished the regular season as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation and earned the No. 1 seed in NCAA Super Region 4.
Achaerandio had the third-most goals in the PacWest this season with 15. For a stretch of the season, he was the most dominant forward in the conference. Achaerandio scored nine goals in eight games during the month of October as he helped the Sea Lions to an 11-win season in his first year wearing the green and gold.
A total of eight All-PacWest first-team selections are from Azusa Pacific, including three-time All-PacWest honoree
Arutro Astorga who had double-digit goals and assists for the second season in a row. The other three-time All-PacWest honoree is
Moises Claudio from Notre Dame de Namur after he helped the Argonauts record two shutout victories this season. Dominican’s
Luke Raley led the conference in goals with 18 and was named to the first team as well. Hawai`i Pacific’s
Gerrit Arzberger and Concordia’s
Michael Oakson also merited first-team All-PacWest recognition.
