Colorado Mines Upsets No. 1 Azusa Pacific In Second Round

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific's perfect season came to an abrupt end on Saturday evening when an in-form No. 8 seeded Colorado Mines upset Azusa Pacific 2-1 in the second round of the NCAA postseason, which was the Cougars' only loss of the season.

After a record-setting 18-0-0 regular season, the Cougars played their first postseason match on Saturday. Colorado Mines scored the first goal of the game in the second minute to put the Cougars in the rare position of being behind in a game. That didn't last long, however, as James Ndubueze tied the game with his 18th goal of the season in the fifth minute.

Jason Zobott gave Colorado Mines the lead back in the second round match of the NCAA Super Regional with a goal in the 29th minute to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. The Orediggers scored on their only two shots on goal in the entire game.

Throughout the second half, the Orediggers stayed back on defense and did all they could to keep the score at 2-1. Azusa Pacific outshot Colorado Mines, 22-6 with a 10-2 advantage in the second half. The Cougars produced three corner kick attempts in the second half and had three shots on goal that were all saved. The Cougars' best scoring opportunity came in the 69th minute when a header by Ndubeze went just wide. Another opportunity came in the 86th minute when a shot was deflected in the box and Jesse Echeverria was the first to the ball, but his shot went over the crossbar.

The Cougars finish the season with an 18-1-0 record after the most successful regular season in PacWest history. Azusa Pacific had eight first-team All-PacWest selections, including seniors, Arturo Astorga and Bruno Pagani.
